how can you play with two people when playing the power battles(where you can beat the bosses from MM 1-7)?

I believe that player 2 has to either press Z or start to coin in. If not, just keep playing around with buttons until you get it.

Start a game. Then have player 2 press Z, and the mini select a character message (like when you restart after a game over) pops up where P2's health meter should be. Player 2 selects a character, and then they teleport in to join your fight. They'll start every fight with you after that.
