...the WORST band I have ever seen in concert. Before seeing them in person I actually respected that band. I didn't like their music, but I at least respected them for what they were. They literally had no crowd interaction or stage show. Every song sounded exactly the same(do they realize they use the same riff and drum beats over and over and over again?). Tom sounds even worse in person singing then he does on a cd.
I'm not trying to ruffle feathers here, but Jesus how is this band considered one of the greatest metal acts ever???
If it wasn't for Mushroomhead and Marilyn Manson being so amazing last night, Mayhem Fest would have sucked!

Who considers them that? The only decent album they ever made was South of Heaven. And even by then the whole 'we're satanists, be afraid!' thing was getting kind of lame.
In their (partial) defense, their touring style sounds like it hasn't changed much since the 80s. MOST bands back then didn't do big budget stage shows. A bit of pyro and a light show, maybe, but nothing major. The notable exceptions, of course, were bands like Alice Cooper (who many saw as a 'novelty act') and Iron Maiden. (Who ARE one of the greatest metal acts ever and I will throw army ants on anyone who says otherwise).
Back then, though, ticket prices were cheap enough that you felt you got your money's worth just hearing the song live, even if through horrible mixing board. Nowadays with tickets so bloody expensive, I think concert goers deserve a bit of a show. Maybe not Gwen Stefani 'musical dancing and 80 costume changes' big, but that sounds...very disappointing.
HK, anyone else remember Alice Cooper on the Muppets?

Then they need to get out of that mentality. Killswitch Engage(another band who uses the same riff in every song) put on a much better show then Slayer did. Adam and Howard actually interacted with the crowd.

I seen a concert with Slayer and fear factory years. The venus was a moderate size but slayer was so loud it was distorted. One of slayers albums i think South of Heaven is actually a live album with no audience, if that makes sense. i own all of slayers cds.

I strongly disagree, when Slayer came to Australia I saw them and was really impressed with there performance and skill... If your not a fan of them though what made you think you would have enjoyed them at a concert? If I went to a Rolling Stones concert im pretty sure i would hate it, but someone who like the band would love it. Im not sure what point your trying to make.

I went to a Doug Stone concert (he's a Country Music artist and yes I love Conutry Music) several years ago and you would think that by listening to his CDs he would be kinda dull on stage, instead he was very interactive with crowd, and was a blast to see and hear compared to Travis Tritt who didn't do much of anything other than just stand and sing.
I would love to see Toby Keith, Brad Pasily, Reba, Brooks & Dunn, and Big & Rich in concerts. I would give my right nut to a Garth Brooks concert live and in person and he's a real live wire on stage.

garth was the first concert I ever went to. Also the best concert I have ever been too. The man is a showman and a great singer all in one.

I didn't go to the concert for them. Hell, I cared more about Killswitch Engage more then them. My point was, all these years people have told me how amazing Slayer's stage show is and yadda yadda yadda...They stand there...They do not anything at all. Its aggravating that such a "legendary" band is so bad live.
To add to Coughler's list of bands to see before you die
Slipknot
KISS
Mushroomhead(preferably on their annual Halloween tour)
Wednesday 13
LIZZY BORDEN

Though I'm not a huge fan of American metal bands (more into the Gothenburg scene these days), I've always kinda liked Slayer. Never seen them in person though.

I second Megadeth. I'm torn on Metallica, because now that they've gone all like sober and psychotherapy, I don't know if it'd be worth it. They lost me with the Black album. St Anger was godawful. And I didn't even listen to Death Magnetic, because the album cover looked like, ahem, ladyparts. I cannot take an album that looks like a va-jay-jay seriously. Much less to the register.
Corrosion of Conformity used to put on a great small-venue show. I saw them in NC, and after the show they came out and drank with us. VERY cool.
HK, I was cool. Once.

My ears never hurt so much after than any other band than Metallica. Slipknot was close but man Metallica my ears bleed god it scared me the next morning.
AND COC is cool seen them once. I wanna see Biohazard live not sure how great they are i have there live cd it sounds good but they enhance those, all bands do it.

Ah jeez, you guys are making my vision all swimmy with flashback sydrome!
Back in my long haired, shredded jeans head banger days I revered Slayer as one of my favorites, next to Coroner, Iron Maiden, and King Diamond. I remember seeing them in concert, I believe in 1990 or 91. It was the Seasons in the Abyss tour. My friend and I spent from 8:00 that morning till showtime fashioning sheet metal and styrofoam body armor to wear under our clothes so we didn't get mortally injured in the moshing. The amazing thing was that we made it past the "search for weapons" guy at the door!
Seasons was the last Slayer album I owned before I traded my interest in for Metallica, back when they were still good (up to Justice).
The "shock effect" of the satanist stuff was starting to wear off and was just getting disturbing and monotonous. I don't even know where any of my old Slayer cassettes are anymore.
But ah, memories...

"...so he pushed her down the stairs...to DIIIIEEEEE!"
Classic stuff, that!
Saw him around the same time as Slayer (89, 90) at St Andrews Hall, Detroit. Lots of goat skull shaking and atmospheric lighting. Didn't need the Slayer body armor for that concert, so I left it home.

I disagree with this. I don't believe Slayer is the greatest Metal band of all time. But they are one of my favorites. Kerry King's got his thrash sound most bands can't touch upon. As far as best live shows I've seen, has to be Metallica. Anytime Kirk Hammett comes on to do a solo, the crowd f.uckin' melts.
Now the best Metal band of all time is Iron Maiden. Paul's vocals are amazing. Bone chilling, incredible badass band right there.
F.uck it, I'll put Motorhead on it too. Since if I'm going to get trashed to any band (besides Municipal Waste) it'd be Motorhead.
Lemmy you the man!
RIP Les Paul.
