Try 3 days in the summer in the Midwest. At least I knew the neighboring towns had generators, but keeping food cold with ice bags was fun. With a bigger CME, this could be a problem, especially in summer and winter.

1. Older phones themselves do not need on board power.

2. Phone lines and power lines are separate .

3. Landline phone companies have local and central backup power, which means they don't need the power grid to function. So they can operate as long as they have fuel. So as long as you do not have a modern phone you can make calls.

Yeah but, most landlines can work in a normal blackout, used them myself (don't ask me how, probably backup power or low amount of electricity). Plus, usually in a nasty CME or more importantly an EMP the circuits of the phone gets fried. Even if you build new power lines, those phones and computers are gone with the data with them. Human beings are tougher than we think, but I hate to think about this stuff ever happening, with a diabetic mother and a stubborn emphysmic dad. I not worry about this stuff happening, but I wish technolgy was a wee bit tougher! It would a rough few months if the worst case scenario happens.

Hmm.. This kind of aggressive comment is not necessary. It is baiting in it's wording to get the other user to reply aggressively. Not needed. You have received quite a few complaints lately due to your overly aggressive attitude, how you seem to look down on everyone and that you act as if you are the foremost expert on everything.

Who the hell knows when the world is going to end? Not me, not any of us. It could end as soon as I hit the "Submit" button for this post for all I know. Also, the Mayan calendar could supposedly be off by 100 years in the past or the future. In addition, why should we just say the Mayans had magical knowledge that no one else had or has today? If they're so smart, then why did their civilization fall? If you're going to believe in the Mayans, you might as well accept whatever "supernatural source" they got that calendar from as your god/gods.

Actually we do know. In about 1 billion years, the sun will have reached a temperature so high that all surface water on Earth will boil off. So it is just a matter of time. It's just so far off that we have more than enough time to pack up and move to a new planet. I think Doctor Who did an episode on it.
