What would you look for in a good Sonic game?
I'm doing some researching for my fan-game made using game maker 7.0
It'll be a 2D platformer, I want to know what you look for in a good game.

2D for one thing.
No stupid story about magic crystals for another thing.
But what I'd really look for in a Sonic game:
1. Varied environments for one thing, including, but not limited to : icy zone, lava zone (jungle or hellish caves), industrial wasteland, techno-looking zone, casino-themed zone, and of course the green hill zone.
2. Complicated level design with lots of different paths and secrets, where you see the just out of reach result but can't for the life of you find how to get there. Rough them out on paper first.
3. Less emphasis on platforms and more emphasis on crazy roller coaster looking stuff. The problem is, how hard can that actually be? Mario is truly challenging because you have to negotiate the level, whereas Sonic is more about speed and show. But it is Sonic, not Mario, so make it fast and crazy, and also hard.
4. I always liked the 3 stage to a zone set up of 1, rather than the 2 stage setup of 2. I like going straight into the Robotnik fight right at the end of a full stage 3.
5. Graphics are also important. Mario can get away with looking simple because it's so technical. Sonic relies on crazy stuff, so it has to look cool as well.
6. No Tails. Just tried and true Sonic the Hedgehog doing his thing.
It's bad ass that you're making a video game for fun. I used to make my own Doom maps back in the day. Now I'm going into CG and maybe even game design.

Although a second player character would be a necessity, don't you think? Someone similar to Player 1, but also very different. Luigi to Mario, Arbiter to Master Chief, that kind of thing.
I'd like to see very complex levels, perhaps making use of acrobatics to get by. (Like wall jumps to get up narrow areas, or doing a cartwheel-esque thing to get along a series of platforms)

Then I think you'll be pleased to know the game's called Sonic and Shadow. More info on the game (so far) on my website (http://www.freewebs.com/infernalampge)
sorry dark zarak, Tails is in it too. I've already planned a couple of ZONES. You guys seem to be thinking on the same lines when it comes to zones. Although, the 4th Zone is going to look awesome but I won't tell you what it is yet...

Neat. I didn't think of Shadow, he tends to get the shaft in terms of games.
Although that link doesn't work.

Sounds interesting, and I want big ass bosses!
An intruding story and enemies that pop out of nowhere, maybe even levels in which you will have to fight true loads of enemies to get to the other side, kinda like in the 3D games, just in 2D.

keep just the guys in it..atleast as playable chars...amy and that lil bunny girl with the chao(sp?) always annoyed me....i mean if anything maybe a level, where you gotta save them at the end. would be interesting if somehow they gave support to who ever ur playing in the game?
bring back the secret level to get a chaos emerald...i loved jumping in the huge ring at the end of a level. one thing i never liked was the health system...i like haveing a health meter not just if you have rings or not...something they did change is that when you get hit you dont loose all your rings just most of them.
for music stick with classic sonic music but i wouldnt mind hearing some alternative rock like they have incorperated in the adventure series

sorry, amy's in it. but i've left out cream the rabbit and rouge the bat. cuz they annoy me... A LOT! there's another female character but i wont say who...
as for the music, I'm putting in things like the death egg music (sonic 3 i think) and an example of the new rock is his world (sonic '06) and sky deck (sonic adventure) and sorry it's rings not health

I prefer rings to health.
It's not at all "if you have rings or not". Rings don't just vanish like a health meter unit. When you lose them, you can get most of them back depending on how good you are. It's the perfect way to have the player control how much punishment he takes. That's a concept that I don't think has ever been replicated since. It's just another thing to master and exploit for your benefit. Some places, like platform spots can cheat you out of the rings, but that's why you just have enough in the level.

It seems that you got your answers. It's pretty much that simple. If more people think of something, they'll post. Otherwise, you've probably yielded all the fruits that can come from asking advise on Seibs.
