More super-articulating fun! G1 Inferno...

Postby Ramrider » Fri Aug 03, 2007 1:30 am

Inspired by all the brilliant super-articulation projects going on lately (Ptitvite's Dinobots and Devastator's gestalts, for example), I've decided to have a crack myself. Digging out my old junker Inferno, I've taken him apart to give him some proper joints.

At this point, I'd already got a knee working; I basically scored and snapped the leg at the appropriate points (one side just above the knee, and the other side just below), and filed the joint down. I also used a needle file to slightly widen the screwhole inside the knee.

Here the left leg is scored and ready for snapping...

Here he is after snapping and filing the left leg, showing the parts it's been split into...

...and showing the new assembled leg...

After that, I set to work on the hips. I took the groin, hips and upper knees from a messed-up Shockini. After cutting the legs right off the torso, I used a diamond burr to buzz a socket for the waist's ball-joint. The hip-plate has been trimmed down and fixed to the Shockini's groin and hips, and the the upper knees were filed down and installed into Inferno's thighs to give him a rotary joint there.

These shots show a small sample of the movement available to him.

So now the legs are nicely articulated - the ball joints are a little loose, but I may attempt to tighten them up a bit with superglue or something.

I need to get the arms apart next to see what I can do with them...

BTW, you use shockini joints? no wonder it's a bit loose.
I tried those and was a bit deceived.

Yeah, 'Kinis are awesome. It's understandable that the joints are a bit loos in this case, since they're not designed to handle as much weight as these are. On the other hand, they're handling the weight just fine; the only off-popping is when I try to pivot the legs back at the waist (former hips), and that joint is very stiff. I could do with finding a way to loosen it. I'm also wondering if a bit of hot glue in the sockets would help to pad them out and stiffen them - a sort of custom grommet. I might try that...

Hot glue is my answer to everything!! It won't damage the socket like crazy glue.
Anyways, great work!! it's beautiful!

I've used glue, nail polish, and paint to try an tighten joints. In every case with significant movement, each substance was eventually rubbed off and forced out. If you're not planning on playing with the figure much then it really doesn't matter, otherwise the only real solution is to use joints that are tighter to begin with.

Sorry, 'fraid I've had other stuff on the go as well; not to mention I'm still not sure what to do with the arms yet...

Agree'd

The arms are already pretty well articulated (could be better of course), but they're already good. The head is probably going to be difficult.

Anyway, love where this is going. This is was HasTak should've done with their reissues. If I didn't value my G1's too much, I'd probably be doing this myself (or more accurately: I'd be destroying my stuff in order to attempt doing this myself).

The arms are okay, but I would like to give the shoulders more movement if I can. The head shouldn't be much of a problem, actually; I'm gonna try and balljoint it, but I'll probably make a cast first. If it doesn't work, a rotary joint shouldn't be too much hassle.

Its a joke. You are known for articulating G1 bots. Someone else is doing it on this page... then they vanish. Obviously you took him out.

Oh, sorry keeblezak :? I don't know what image/opinion people have of me so I took it on the bad side...thinking it was sarcasm or something like that but I was not certain. BTW, it's not my game  I'm stuck in the 80's :D

Yeah, Ptitvite iced me for treading on his turf. That's it...

Actually, since I had to tidy up for a party I'm not even sure where Inferno is at the moment, even if I had worked out what I was doing to him next... :?

I'm not getting much bashing done at the moment anyway, to be honest, I'm drawing more at the mo, and trying to get my Mosaic coloured; although I'm also working on my Classics repaints (improving Grimlock, and doing Thundercracker and Skywarp, natch). That, and trying to perfect my Screamer nosecone cast so I can fix Ramjet (and Dirge, when I can get another RJ). And geewunising Classics Megatron... I think you get the idea... :P
