ha! my upbringing was pretty close to yours. i had essentially the entire first season on a couple VHS tapes, which i watched endlessly. and like you i had my parents rent me TF:TM as often as i could. i never even saw seasons 2-4 until adulthood when rhino started releasing those shiney book style DVD sets. and im just a little older (30. born in '84 the year of our lordmegatronus wrote:I'm 27, so I fall on the younger end of the spectrum for folks who enjoy G1. I grew up on repeats/VHS, and every weekend I would make my parents rent me Transformers: The Movie. That movie, more than anything else, ingrained the legitimacy of G1 in my brain, for reasons that largely mitigate your G1 criticisms. The Movie was (more) serious, and had much less the hokey feel of the TV show.

And for the record, I don't "hate" G1, I just don't think it's the be all and end all of Transformers, and I think a lot of things about it were really, really dumb. I like neo designs because they keep the good things about the original designs whilst getting rid of the crap bits. I'm all for homages and design inspirations, but I don't think we should let nostalgia get in the way of progress.

Can easily get Neo-G-1 Dinobots from Hasbro for a fraction of the cost. Like AOE Dinobots, BW Neo Dinobots, TFA Dinobots, Energon Dinobots and BW Dinobots.
If i'm going to spend 3rd party cash of anywhere from $500 to $1000 on G-1 Dinobots toys. Then they've got to look as close to the 1985 Dinobots designs as possible.

Unless Toyworld's DinoNots manage to win me over (which they very well might given they combine) I'm going FP all the way.

Wait... since when do Toyworld's Dinobots combine? I thought that was just Shuraking?

Rated X wrote:Love swoop, but hate the damn red. I get that they wanted to save the blue for the Diaclone exclusive, but it kills the cartoon accurate aspect that I thought they were shooting for. I might have to buy the expensive blue and chrome swoop and swap out the chrome parts with a red swoop. Im not gonna buy all the chrome versions if Slag is gonna have a blue chest.

I dunno, these look more like FP's take on WFC/FoC Dinos more than the G1 cartoon
what? no... planet X's dinobots are FOC. fansproject's are totally neo.guarayakha wrote:I dunno, these look more like FP's take on WFC/FoC Dinos more than the G1 cartoon

Not a problem, but it is an interesting take on the character if that is what they were going for.

Hell, even some guys like Ehobby Sunstorm or Ehobby SG Blaster, which are recolored G1 toys could rightly be considered Neo G1. Because they're new additions to G1. MPs and classics are all Neo G1 in that they're all new interpretations of the G1 toys.
Ditto most of the Energon Trilogy homages.
I think it's a little better to say things are more "modern". Then you have a better argument. I mean, obviously, guys based off the Fall of Cybertron game would have a more modern look than the toyworld guys. And most Classics releases are more modern than MPs in their look.

That's an overly literal take on the term neo...

I'm a literal person. People toss around the word Neo as if it's doesn't mean new at all. Neo G1 MEANS New G1. That's what it means. They're ALL new G1.
The dinobot sets that aren't Neo G1? The normal releases you find at stores.
