Hardcore Transformers collectors, the kind who would be into a line of Pretender related action figures, pretty much just collect TFs.
One thing I'm realizing is that this line isn't really for Transformers fans. We were a good group to get involved with it because by an large, TF collectors tend to be spenders, but it's not a "Transformers 3rd party product" with guest appearances from other franchises. It's a nostalgia line.
To my point, there isn't a "just get the TF Pretenders" option in the pledging. I wouldn't mind the Bombburst and Skullgrin figures, especially if a paired option was there.
I think they should have marketed this to the TF fandom. They should have focused on characters with reusable parts, like Cloudburst, Landmine, and Waverider; and then gone from there. The over ambitious nature of this is injuring it.
I agree with your underlying point to an extent - the line isn't geared towards a particular fandom, and that lack of marketing focus can be considered an unforced error.
But Kickstarter has its own rules, and universalizing the line may have been their funding strategy. Not entirely sure.
I would have loved this to have been directed solely towards TF homages, but it's not like we're not getting anything out of it. Skullgrin & Blood look nice, as do the Scorponok & Fort Max tech drones, and all 4 are available now.
