I recently got hired at Wal*Mart in the Lawn and Garden section. I've been selling a lot of highly expensive grills. They're all name brands. It seems like every other hour we are getting them back due to the grills being poorly constructed, made of faulty materials, and over all shotty craftsmanship. I went to wheel a grill to the register for a customer and as soon as I went to move it the wheels snapped off and the grill came tumbling down. The plastic broke that was holding the wheels to the grill. Today, no one was even near the grills and a grill just collapsed on itself. The plastic support system just completely buckled. The funniest part about this is, the grills are more expensive this year then last. Last year they didn't have this problem.
Has anyone else noticed things like this?

It's probably the economy, things gets crappier and yet more expensive. Those grills sound dangerous though, you don't want things full of fire collapsing at the wrong time. They should be recalled.

Its not even just one brand either. Its CharBroil and UniFlame. I think there is one more brand we carry that keeps falling apart. I just don't understand it to be honest.

Can't really complain when its literally the only place hiring. Plus, I'm making 8 dollars an hour which is 70 cents over minimum wage. Moving up in the world I am

True, and it's a job which is more than some people can say.
But you don't really shop at wal-mart for quality, just cheap prices.
Which is the problem.
You can have things two of three ways.
Now
Cheap
Well Made
You can get something cheap and now, but it wouldn't be well-made. Or you can get it now and well-made but it won't be cheap, or cheap and well-made but it won't be now.
Walmart specializes in the Cheap and Now department.

Re: Prices increasing, product quality decreasing?
I went looking for a lawn mower there. I played with it because I was unsure of the wheels and how the motor was attached to the green metal. Welll.......
I broke the metal off. It was so weak that after touching it to pick it up and check underneath, it snapped off. It did it on 2 others too. I told the associate who was on "break" there.... Like anybody works at this Walmart..... he said it happens a lot. I asked him what happens when you sell him an lawn mower that you know to be defective that could kill him/her?
The answer was "I don't care." Wow. I thought people had consciences. Guess I was wrong.
I understand having to make things cheaper but don't make them a hazard. I bet they'll look into it after the grill breaks and a ton of hot, flaming food burns somebody badly. Well, that goes back to my other point so I guess not.

Conscience has been dead in industry for a long time. Look at that peanut processing plant that had roaches and mold. They knew it was only a matter of time before something awful happened: they didn't care. Or all those toys that just 'happened' to have lead in them. As for employees, well, most of my students work in 'entry level' jobs like this, and everything you've described fits them perfectly. Their attitude is, well, why *should* I care?
Now, as to the litigation that will ensue when someone gets burned by one of these shoddy grills, well, that's the new Great American Pastime. You *do* know the story about why McDonald's coffee cups have that label, 'Caution: contents may be hot'?
And who knows? It may be cheaper in the long run to sell crappy grills and pay *one* payout than to manufacture non-crappy grills. They're rolling the dice with every sale.
HK, it feels so good *and* bad to catch a student plagiarizing. You want to talk 'no conscience'? How about 'no integrity' or 'honor' or 'ethics'?
