Question of the day.

I see a lot of people talk about buying everything that comes out. All animated, armada, all movie 1, 2, and 3 toys. Then they end up being all for sale in the forums. Do some of you guys just wait for the next big thing or does buying everything fulfill a need? Some may see this as criticism, but I'm just curious. It seems a lot of money could be saved when you buy a full run and end up selling them all for half price. I understand space issues or hard times can happen as well.

i wish i could buy everything that comes down the market but lets face it, thats unrealistic (looking at credit card bill to verify) yep, very unrealistic. better to pic and choose what works for you.
also you need to consider how much room you may have on your shelves.

I used to try and get everything that hit the shelves and managed to keep that up all through Cybertron. But then we exploded in to movieverse and I lost interest in most of it. For the moment I get wat I expect to be really good. Sometimes that doesn't work out all to well, ROTF Axor, for instance.

Not everything. I only collect movieverse and the Classics/universe/RTS/Generations line and pass on quite a bit.
I'm looking forward to this Transformers prime line coming out as I hope it means movieverse will slow down. I am not going to collect the Prime line, just hopeing it means another will slow down. Once the movieverse and Classics/universe/RTS/Generations end, I will be a happy camper.

If I buy something and later sell it for half price, I consider it a "rental". If I can buy a figure for $20, enjoy it for a few months or a year, and then sell it for $10, I'm getting more for my money than if I spent that $10 on, say, a 90-minute movie or a drink at a bar.

i pretty much buy it all
but it all depends. i did not buy a single PPC, i hated them. the way i work is that im a completionist. if i see it in the show i get it. i bought
almost every animated toy( i misses out on TFA arcee and cybertronian ratchet and never saw a blackout)
i got every TF that was in the first and second movie,
i got almost every classics toy( missing cliffjumper, ultramagnus, grapple, windcharger) i dont get legends class.
got as much of the unicron triliogy as i could, i was young and did not care as much for getting everyone in the show.
same with BW and beast machines.
and i dont collect G1 but i do have a few that were given to me.
and i have never sold a single transformer out of my collection, i cant bring myself to do it
but as far as new lines yet to come out, i will be getting every TF:prime toy and every DOTM that i saw in the movie.

"Hype" is a good motivator for buying stuff you don't really need or sometimes even want. I've fallen for the hype too, when buying some of the TF's from movie 1 and 2... Often, the shells only fall from your eyes once you get home and open the package. It is then when you find out for yourself that the toy you bought is an over-priced, ill-designed, badly quality-controlled PoS. Anyhow, that's what happened to me with a lot (not all) of those movieverse figures. So no more hype-inspired buys for me!
I'm so meta, even this acronym...

Thank Christ I only buy what I think is great. I treat it like a salad bar, take what I want and leave the rest! I think I would be in some serious **** if I did collect everything Transformers under the sun...video games, mighty mugs, Kre-O etc.

Don't feel too bad, Blackout was never released in the U.S.

I never sell my transformers. I made a mistake of listening to what other people say I should do and gave my Armada collection to my wife's brother, in which he still has all of them. And the time I traded my Classics Devastator for Unicron (yeah, I'm really kicking myself for that one) was not wise, but I have kept everything I buy since I started back. I'm glad I'm not a completest, or else I would be in trouble.......

I used to only buy what I thought looked good.
Now, I only buy what I think is amazing. I'm getting overly picky about that I collect lately. I've been spoiled by Yamato Valkyries, 3A Toys and imported statues I think...

I usually buy whatever I really want; I try not to buy on impulse. I'm a "real" collector now, so once you get reeled in to the hobby it gets harder to say "no". I probably overdid it a little the past 8 months, so I'm not buying everything in sight. Like, I want Ultimate Optimus Prime, but I'm sure he'll stick around for a sale around Christmas. I'm not a big fan of the smaller scales either: Legion/Legends, Commander, Scout, so I usually stick to the bigger ones unless one catches my eye.
Please note: If you think I may be joking, I probably am.

I dont want a ton of TFs like that one members signature pic. That's out of hand. What I do buy is very selective and I feel the urge to buy things I don't really want but I think back about the motto: "everything in moderation" so I'm not left asking myself what happened.

I Have never completed a full line. Usually i buy what i like or for sakes of for example completing the DOTM screencast. But even then i still buy selectively (waiting for new DOTM Voyager ratchet).
Also, i never sell any of my TFs. Well as a collector teh whole point is, collecting, and if i buy a fig, i always do so with the intention of keeping it.

Re: Question of the day.
I made the mistake of buying heavily during the Energon and Cybertron days. I loved Armada a lot, and I wanted to continue that love to the following lines, but my heart wasn't in it at all, and I ended up with a lot of figures that I've either sold or am currently trying to.
The nice thing is, selling off those figures has helped me pay for (and make space for) the Animated figures (which I love) and the movie figures (which I'm better at selectively choosing which I want).
