Shockwave - Truly a Robot in Disguise

Postby prehistoryanimal » Mon Feb 26, 2007 1:46 am

good eve, all :)

my argument tonight - G1 shockwave (astro magnum) was based of the takatoku macross vf-1x 1/55 valkyrie (jetfire).

reference google or wiki for toyco and shockwave and you'll find that toyco was a korean company that licensed the design to radio shack producing the "shackwave". i believe that toyco based shockwave's design off the jetfire schema, but specifically the vf-1j. check out the pic below-

There are a couple of similarities... Im not sure that counts as basing it on the other...

More like the sort of aesthetic resemblance you'd expect from two items designed in the same culture at the same time.

Clearly they are both robotic cyclopses(cyclopsi?, one eyed things) so they MUST be based off of eachoter...

the fact that one turns into an aircraft and one a laser gun is irrelevant..

Sure there might be some resemblances, that hardly counts as copying.

Interesting, but I'd say it's just a coincidence.

I always found these two simillar, but I don't know if I'd say one copied the other.

As kids my friend had Jetfire and I had Shockwave. We used to pretty much always use them opposite eachother...

All these years later when I finally got a Jetfire, I was disappointed he was taller than Shockwave, so they didn't look that cool opposite eachother without some boost for Shockwave... Later I'd find Energon Shockblast too tall for Classics Jetfire and be disappointed again...

I know what you're getting at and I think it's possible that the style was adapted/copied. Macross was pretty hot back in the 1980's so were the Transformers. And many Asians toy companies copied designs and styles in order to get a piece of the money. Heck, many Asian pirates do it today.

Anyone notice how that last caption refers to a 'customized' Jetfire leg?

the 'customized' portion of the legs refers to its repaint and decal additions to make it a' la vf-1d from macross. :)
