Target near me had these on clearance even before the film was in theaters. They left the original movie's lineup at full price, though.

On the one hand, the design and pricing makes it look like these were made to appeal to the collector crowd more than to kids. I think that particular demographic (the collectors) ended up being composed largely of the naysayers, who would never buy merchandise from a movie that ruined their childhood.
To be fair, though, they didn't make toys pertaining to the original movie until it spun off into a cartoon show, which was much more clearly aimed at kids than the film was. Even then, the figures were based on their cartoon iterations and not the original actors from the movie, so they had a more "toy-like" quality to them.
