The line-up on my top shelf is:
Classics Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, Jetfire, Grimlock, Mirage, Bumblebee, and Rodimus
+
Energon Bulkhead as Springer
Energon Downshift as Wheeljack
Energon Arcee as Arcee
Energon Inferno as Inferno
Energon Roadblock (?) as Grapple
Target Exclusive Movie Jazz as Jazz
Target Exclusive Movie Strongarm as Hound
Cybertron Metroplex as Metroplex
Cybertron Quickmix as Quickmix
... and Movie Landmine, because he's so cool, we should have gotten him 25 years ago.
And my Decepticons are kind of scattered about, a lot of them hanging from the ceiling, but generally the line up is:
Classics Megatron, Astrotrain, Starscream, Skywarp, and Ramjet.
+
Cybertron Soundwave as Soundwave
Energon Shockblast as Shockwave
Energon Slugslinger as Slugslinger
Movie Booster x10 as Laserbeak
Movie Brawl as Brawl
TMII Tripredacus Agent as Ravage
... and a whole bunch of Decepticons from other series to bolster their forces.
Also, sometimes I make the room to have the Energon and Classics Constructicons mixed and matched so that they're all green, and add in Energon Demolisher, and voila - 6 Green Constructicons.

Re: Stand ins for G1 favourites in your classics collection
Energon Divebomb as Banzai-tron
Anime Reissue Bumblebee as BB (hate the lack of scale with the Classics cars)
Robotmasters Mirage as Mirage
Energon Swerve as Hot Rod(have a custom repaint, really works)
Movie Wreckage as IDW Bludgeon(again have a custom repaint)
Energon Strongarm as Brawn(yet another custom repaint I acquired that works quite well. Axe really suits Brawn)
Universe Devestator (repaint of RID Landfill) as Devestator
Energon Rodimus as Rodimus Prime (would love to see Checkpoint made a Classic G1 character in some continuity)
Energon Tidal Wave as Broadside
Cybertron Hardtop as Beachcomber (would love to see head remolded and repainted to give us Triggercon Ruckus)
Cybertron Starscream (red version that comes with Vector Prime) as Jhiaxus
Machine Wars Prowl as Dragstrip
RID Ultra Magnus as Motormaster (Oh, for a proper repaint!)

Digging that idea, he is very close to the G1 Slugslinger.
Personally, I dont want to add TOO many molds from other lines, dont want to starve the lines they come from,
Titanium, RID, and non repaint Movie add ins dont really sit right to me, the aesthetic is too different and they look misplaced to my eye.
From all the posts, the real winners in my opinion as G1 stands ins are
Energon Inferno as Inferno
Movie Mudflap as Erector
Superlink Wheeljack as Wheeljack
Energon Slugslinger as Slugslinger
Energon Shockblast as Shockwave
Energon Scorponok as Scorponok
Coll Club Astrotrain as Astrotrain
Botcon Ironhide and Ratchet as themselves
Movie Big Daddy as Big Daddy
I think these additions fit in to the aesthetic, making it look like that are from the same line rather than a mismash.
