Here's a cheap Armada Skywarp for ya:

Some of the exclusives are not worth it, and especially the botcon stuff, unless it's some of the cheaper stuff. $200+ for a Botcon Thundercracker, or even a Descent into Evil Ironhide? Ridiculous.

Anything that's not covered in a student budget, i.e. quite a lot
You just have to careful and look around for a good deal - then pounce when you find it! I found someone selling a complete G1 Ultra Magnus for £13 shipped when he seems to go for no less than £30 before shipping over here, so with a little patience and hard work it can be done

Well, it's all a matter of your perspective though. To you the Botcon toys may not be worth the exorbinant price. But to me, the movie toys are such garbage that $10 for a Deluxe is outrageous. I'll pay any price I find reasonable for any piece I deem valuable to me, so long as I feel the figure is worth it. That being said, there are pieces that I just cannot justify purchasing at present, like the Games of Deception set and Fort Max. The problem is those things will just keep getting more and more expensive the longer I wait to purchase them. What I should have done was spend the money last summer to pick up the Botcon Seekers while everyone else was spending $40 on 08 Bumblebees. Curse you, after thought! I am damned by your influence.

But the lucky draw vacmetallized Rodimus Prime as the Spirit of Primus? I'd pay $2,500 easy. It's all about what you want and how far you'd go to get it.
Oh, and over $1,000 for Fort Max? I didn't spend that much on Fort, Brave and Grand combined!
Is this the Primus you're talking about?

That's the one! $599? I'm amazed, saving the link, and waiting for GW's $600 "sorry for the past 8 years" check!

Heh. I used to blow insane amounts of dough on TFs. At one point I had spent enough to buy a car by the end of my G1/G2 era.
It was absolutely a waste and completely ridiculous. And...I didn't even have all of the figures I wanted!
Basics? Yep. I'll spend $8.00 on a well crafted figure.
Deluxes? Yep. $10.00 is a small price to pay for what you receive.
Voyagers? Yep. $20.00 is not much to ask for a generally great figure. (although Voyager Movie Prime and Megatron weren't worth crap to me.)
Ultras? It depends on the figure, but I generally have no problem paying the price.
Leaders? Absolutely. They put some hard work into the Leader Class figures (usually. Movie Prime and Brawl are proof of that.)
Supremes? A guilty pleasure. Sure they might not always be super intricate but they're a lot of fun.
Ultimate? Eh..no. Bumblebee just wasn't incredible enough I'm hoping that Animated Omega Supreme will be worth the dough. I'd hate to have to skip out on buying him, but I will if I have to.
Fortress Maximus? Not a chance. I won't pay those prices for him. It's ridiculous.
Predaking? I won't even pay the $60.00 to buy the KO (though I came close until I realized they were only available from Chinese sellers and I just don't have the patience to wait that long after giving them my money.)
I've always wanted PowerMaster Overlord. I won't pay $250-600.00 for a toy!
I sometimes regret spending the $80.00+ that I spent on Masterpiece Megatron, but in the end, he was worth it. A lot of good work went into him and Takara deserves the dough. It is, in fact, a masterpiece.
There are plenty of figures I will absolutely not pay the prices for, because let's face it...these are toys and none of them should cost as much as a down payment for a car, or a month's full rent.
Yes, I realize there's emotional attachment, considering we grew up with them, and I also realize that anything of value will go up over time, but seriously...regardless of whether or not you can pay for it, it's insane that toys command such high prices.
I can imagine a lot of nice things that could be done with that money.

Re: Transformers you will NEVER want to get based on price
I thought that I would express why I say that there aren't any TF's that I'd rule out buying.
I look at my collection almost as a museum. It represents the history of TF's, the advances in engineering, the changes along the way, and the rarities involved. I want to be able to represent a little bit of everything in my collection.
I have a great connection to the figures, and it's something that I really truly enjoy. Because of this the money aspect means very little to me. I can appreciate why alot of people wouldn't pay the exorbitant amount of money for a Lucky Draw figure, but it really doesn't faze me (I still don't own one yet though). Also please remember that I am not rich, I make a decent income as does my wife, but I still have to budget.
I think that it really depends on what your attachment is to these figures that determines what you'll spend. It makes you no greater or lesser of a fan but some people just take their hobbies more seriously than others. Me, I go all out.
