A Drunk Crashed Through Our Cornfield
Sometime last night, this drunk guy took his sister's mini-van and was driving down our road passed our farm when he lost control and drove right through our cornfield, knocked down some 300 feet of electric fence and crashed into a few trees in our sheep pasture. He managed to drive right out of our sheep pasture and drove right out of our driveway -- luckily without causing any more damage -- and got back onto the road, only to go air born as soon as he got to the stop sign and ended up in somebody's backyard just straight across the highway.
My dad just got done talking to the State Trooper not too long ago. Apparently this guy was just let out of jail not too long ago for drunk driving, and was living with his sister and brother-in-law. He was at a party drinking, and apparently he took his sister's mini-van out on a joy ride and ended up totaling it. And this was a new Ford mini-van. There's a headlight, a couple huge chunks of fender, and tail-light casings strewn throughout the sheep pasture where he had tried to figure out how to get back onto the road. And this is the guy's fourth offense! So obviously he'll be in jail for quite some time, and we're going to work with the police and our insurance company in regards to the damage this guy has done.
Seriously, this is just unreal. This is the second time that we had a drunk driver in a stolen vehicle come crashing through our pasture. I think our farm is cursed or something. And the funny thing is, I did not wake up and hear this guy crashing or drive out of our driveway. I would normally wake up and hear these sorts of things. I'm telling you, I'm just shocked at what happened.

Wow, that's crazy. Drunk Driving is one of those offenses that when you get caught the second or third time you should go away for a very long time.

It certainly is.
Well, we had just talked to one of our neighbors, who just happens to live nearby the guy's sister's place. This is his SIXTH DUI offense. The guy was in jail, but here in Michigan our governor decided to release all of these prisoners in an effort to bring more money to the state, and so his sister took him in and was trying to help the guy out. Well, he violated his parole just by going to a party and getting all drunk -- apparently some people at the party tried to take the keys away from him, but they obviously didn't try hard enough -- and he just totally trashed his sister's van, first through our property and then ending up in somebody else's backyard.
He's definitely going to be in jail now, and his sister is throwing all of his belongings out onto her front yard, so she's definitely not going to have him stay at his place ever again; heck, she shouldn't have taken him in, she should have just let him live on the streets instead.
But we're definitely going to work with our insurance company to get things all straighten out as far as the damages to our cornfield and the electric fence.

Try telling THAT to my dad. Farming has always been a part of his life. He'd keep on farming for the rest of his days. You dare suggest that he don't farm, and he'll get madder than a hornet and cuss you out.

Its a sheer matter of statistics. If you don't own a corn fiels, the odds of a drunk driver driving threw your corn field is significantly lower

HAve you guys thought about digging a ditch next to the road so people can't make it into the field? its easier than making a 6ft cement wall to stop them.

Get some tank traps, that'll keep them out. By the way, what the hell is wrong with the justice system? He should be thrown in jail for life, he won't stop until he kills somebody.

Because multiple DUIs isn't something you get a life sentence for. Murder is, sure, and he could kill someone, sure, but you can't sentence someone to life in prison for something that hasn't happened.

most states have jail time for a second offense. your 6th can get you a lot of years. they can also get you for negligence,
also if caught with posesson of the drug ecstacy you can be charged with manslaughter per pill. i don't see why this is less severe, so they could try and get him with vehicular manslaughter, along with destruction of property, the cost of the crops, damages for spooking the livestock, and a few other things. Plus since he had 5 priors they'll probably get him with violation of probation/parole on several counts (probably cant get a liscence, and drinking is probably a violation)
yes i know all abouts violation

How did we get to this? I don't think it was ever mentioned he had or was using drugs.

And they'd get nowhere because you can't charge someone for a murder that never happened.

Re: A Drunk Crashed Through Our Cornfield
By all rights, this guy should have stayed in jail, BUT Michigan's oh-so-glorious governor, Jennifer Granholm, decided to let out all the prisoners who had "minor" offenses in an attempt to try and put more money into the state. That, and his sister and brother-in-law shouldn't have bothered taking him in and try to help him out. Hell, they shouldn't have let him drive, even more so since he doesn't have a driver's license.
The guy's brother-in-law stopped at our place, and offered to help repair the fence that the guy had knocked down just trying to get out of our corn field. The brother-in-law stated that the guy had threatened the neighborhood. Of course, this is what Mom had said, because she talked to him. I wished I had told him that if he knew that his brother-in-law had several DUI offenses then why the hell did he kept such a criminal in his house and let him drive and attend any party where he was likely to get drunk. Seriously... some people these days just don't have any common sense.
In response to you guys suggesting what my family should do to keep drunk drivers from crashing through our property, we are not going to burn our fields because our crops is what helps pay the bills (you ever think of that?) and we are not going to dig any ditches because for the most part there's already some ditches, plus trees, that normally keeps people from running off into the road and go crashing into our fields. Besides, this is the only second accident that occurred on our property; the first accident occurred 1-2 years ago. This isn't such a big problem.

Um.. Well actually "Set them on fire" was a sort of in-joke of mine for a while here. I don't think anyone remembers it now, but I did try to cement it a little with my signature back then:

See, the difference in our arguments is that I actually did the research. Manslaughter requires that you kill someone, there is absolutely no piece of law that claims otherwise. You can be charged for a crime you didn't commit, of course, but for a manslaughter charge to work, someone has to have been killed, just like you need drugs on someone to charge them with possession, or they need to be intoxicated to get a DUI.

well excuse the f*** out of me for having an opinion.
and no, you don't need drugs on a person to get them with posession. if they are in your property (left in your car, in your room, ect) you can still get posession. they aren't on the person but they own them. but thats just splitting hairs on wording.
and you can be charged with prostitution with out sleeping with a guy. just watch cops. otherwise undercover cops gotta sleep with them to prove it.
I'm not tryin to say i'm some legal genius or anything, i was just voicing an opinion.
i never said it was fact. and hell wat about all the people that have been sentenced for murder who didn't commit it. they didn't kill anyone and got charged.
i'm just gonna stop now. this is a pointless argument thats not going anywhere. i was just trying to contribute some thoughts and **** gets thrown in my face. i gott better things to do

and for the record, i will admit i was wrong. i did fail to fully research before i said it. was mainly hopeful wishing that he'd get bigger charges.

I just saw on the news that New York has introduced some of the toughest anti-drink driving laws on the planet, and good on them. Its time people stopped being PC about this and cracked down on those brainless apes.
A drunk woman ploughed her friend's car through the house behind ours once, because she wasn't used to driving a manual car. Her excuse "well, if that house hadn't been there I wouldn't have crashed!"
She drove through a stop sign at an intersection. She could have killed someone.
I have NO sympathy for those dolts, especially after I get the honour of helping to clean up the mess they leave.

Re: A Drunk Crashed Through Our Cornfield
Well guys, the other night the State trooper who's working on the case called... the guy who tore through our cornfield and sheep pasture was found dead Monday night. He was overdosed on heron. So, it's evident that he had more than just a drinking problem.
We're still going to work with the insurance company on taking care of the damage that was done to our property, but for the most part the case is closed now that the guy involved died from drug overdose.

Wow, what a sad ending.
I work for driver license in Colorado, and while we have some of the toughest drunk driving laws in the nation, it doesn't stop them from driving - or, sadly, from even getting their license back. I've seen people with 5/6 DUI's still get their privileges back. They've served a lot of time, handed out a lot of money for fines and taken countless classes. They may have to have an interlock device for a few years as part of the reinstatement.
I don't think someone with that many violations and that obvious a problem with drugs and/or alcohol should ever be behind the wheel again. Of coarse, they'll just do it illegally if they can't drive legally.
There's no sense of justice here, just tragedy. He was still a human being, and while he did something wrong, he was still someone's brother/son. There is no chance for him to get clean and sober, or to see how his actions affected the people around him. But, you can only help someone who wants the help.
