Hardware gurus: Disassembling hard drive help request

Postby Aurax » Wed May 16, 2007 9:48 pm

I have a LaCie EDmini d2. Bit o' background: One day, went to turn disk on, nothing. Switched from regular power supply (which it had been on) to the USB interface, same result.

Opened a ticket with LaCie. After several weeks of back & forth about how to retrieve data before sending it back for warranty repair, they granted permission for me to crack the case and try to tie the HD to my system.

Any recommendations on the best way to do this? I opened it up already this evening, then put it all back together when I realized it was a bit out of my league.

A photo of where I get stuck,... just not sure which end of which cables I'm supposed to be detaching.

If anyone has some experience with these doodads, I'd love to hear any advice you might have for this DIY project I've taken upon myself. Thanks.

a few more pics might help, but it looks like the big black piece in your pic is what you want to *very carefully* unplug. It is tight and if you bend any of the pins on the connector, you are hosed.

It also depends on your computer and if it has any upgrade capabilities/options for more than one hard drive.

Also you want to invest in a grounding strap to discharge any static electricity when you open your computer or any computer components (like external HD) because static electricity will damage/destroy your computer. If you are careful it can be done relatively easy. If yoiu want it professionally done, look up in the Yellow Pages under data recovery.

Good luck.
