Secret Transformers Autobot Rescue Squad or S.T.A.R.S.

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

Thanks T-Macksimus, thats awesome! :D I was trying to look up the Omnibots on the various transformer wiki but couldn't find too much information. The Omnibot Overdrive seems kind of like a clone of G1's Sideswipe but he seemed interesting enough to be a little more famous. At least I thought so. He had a more staring role in the S.T.A.R.S. storyline.

I'll try to get the Omnibots and Reflectors (or rather, the 3 components) posted up in the next day or 2. Have to do it in short bursts since my monitor is acting rather...unreliable. The Sourcebooks are a lot more fun than the standard 'tech-spec' style files since they have more room in which to expand on the personalities of the characters. Combiner Teams are all done together rather than having to search multiple books for the individual members and the Combined Mode bio is the final one in the group. Little stuff like that has made going back through these books and finding info lots of fun.

This thread is fantastic! I was a G-1 Old timer, though never knew about the S.T.A.R.S. set.. I was too little to be interested in that at the time. I think in 1984 I was 9 or 10? anyways, wow, I haven't had a chance to read all through this thread just yet, but I plan to today..

The Omnibots are an Autobot subgroup in the Generation 1 continuity family.

Japanese name: Double Changer

Image

The Omnibots are a trio of reinforcements sent from planet Cybertron to assist the Autobots on planet Earth. They each have the ability to unleash a special, powerful weapon while in vehicle mode. They have been known to dimension-hop. So it's unclear whether their appearances throughout the multiverse are separate entities or the same individuals. The Omnibots quickly adapted to Earth's highways, scouting for and attacking Decepticons. Ultra Magnus claimed that the Omnibots were "destined to fight a war in another universe on March 31, 1987" (Screw you Earthlings, right?) if the S.T.A.R.S. Commander did not requisition them.

Their team consists of:

* Camshaft - Function: Scout http://www.tfu.info/1985/Autobot/Camshaft/camshaft.htm
* Downshift - Function: Security Agent http://www.tfu.info/1985/Autobot/Downsh ... nshift.htm
* Overdrive - Function: Strategist http://www.tfu.info/1985/Autobot/Overdr ... rdrive.htm

Dreamwave comics continuity

The Omnibots were defeated by the rampaging Menasor, unleashed on Iacon by Shockwave. "War and Peace" (No wonder they didn't last long...)

The Omnibots were available as a mail-in promotion, billed as "Reinforcements from Cybertron!" for the Autobots. Each came with instructions, decals, and some weapon attachments. No tech specs were included with these figures, as they were so new that they hadn't even had the chance to be tested before shipping off to Earth.

The toys were a set of Diaclone car models unused in the first run of the Transformers figures, and which kept their Diaclone colors and paints as opposed to the rest of the Autobot lineup. They are slightly smaller than the standard Autobot cars of the time, with a similar design style and aesthetic. They are considered by some to be the first "Triple Changers" due to their "third" modes, in which panels folded out to reveal or allow attachment of weapons and accessories.

The Control Center/Command Center

Really captures my imagination and the kid in me. And it makes me wonder if I could construct or design a more advanced one as an Adult? Of course I would use better and more realistic materials and components. I'm brainstorming a little project of maybe drawing up plans or blueprints on how to create an advanced Command Center.

Image

Here is the drawing used on the UK order form that kind of gives the viewer an idea on the scale of that Command Center/ Control Center. Even though this drawing isn't much to look at, the flooring of that Command Center seems interesting. It could actually be a game board of some kind? So anyhow here's my question for those reading this;

1. If you could make your own "Command Center/Headquarters" for your Transformers (Autobots or Decepticons) what would you want incorporated in your Facility?

2. What materials would you use? Wood, Metals, Cardboard, Plastics? Actual Battery powered or Electronic components? Flashing Christmas or Halloween lighting? Old keypads for added special effects?

In my command center I would add a good sized CR Chamber that could fit most Transformers even the Deluxe sized Megatron or Optimus Prime. (I'd also rig some kind of lighting in the CR Chamber, so that with a push of a button or switch small battery powered lights would come on inside the Chamber. I would make a containment area for Armaments. (Toy Weaponry can get lost if not properly organized.) Also a Detention Area for captured enemies. A place for Interrogation and what not... All kinds of fun Security Devices to prevent infiltration by enemy spies.

But I'd like to know what others would add to their Command Centers? It's summer vacation for many Kids. Maybe creating their own Transformers Command Center is just the project they could get into? Of course Parents might want to keep an eye on them so they don't try using power tools without proper supervision. Or so they don't get electrocuted trying to fiddle around with real machinery. For little kids safe materials is advised...

Anyhow here's a partial listing, I just tossed together ideas of things a Command Center could use:

CR Chamber that can fit most TF toys even the Deluxe Models
Repair Drones
Surveillance System w/ Monitoring devices
Command Center Security Devices with make believe Self-Destruct device.
Alert System that can be triggered with a push of a button
Weaponry or Armaments Storage
Tracking Radar System
Main Computer Terminal for Communications ... Image

Or for the Kids who are very computer savvy;

Try creating a Virtual Command Center Online? Create a website that looks and feels like a Command Center for your Transformers Alter egos and Characters!

Hehe...Your Uncle would probably love visiting this thread then. Maybe he was a S.T.A.R.S. member? ;;) As for Ravage, they're not rockets. His old TECH-Spec card says they are 2 powerful heat seeking missiles.

Wow Flare, good find on that pic of the U.K. order form. That gives a lot better idea of what the whole set-up was like. I had always thought the whole thing was just some type of cheesy cardboard console for a kid to sit at but that looks like a cut-away section of a base interior to me. Something the toys interact with.
I'll have to get back to you on the base/playset construction ideas later on. Since my monitor is kinda skitchy I'm going to focus for now on those expanded bios I promised of the Omni-Bots...

Camshaft (grey/silver car)
Primary Function: Scout

Bio: Camshaft enlisted in the Autobot army because he believes the Decepticons must be stopped; he just doesn't want to become one of the casualties of achieving that goal. Camshaft is highly intelligent; he avoids unnecessary risks and always plays it safe. He can't be relied upon for battlefield heroics, but he's excellent at his job. Ironically, his tendency to keep himself out of danger actually makes him the best kind of scout: one that doesn't get caught.

Weapons/Abilities: Subject has a rear-mounted "white noise" scrambler that fires pulses of energy that disrupt scanners and sensors. He uses this weapon in both robot and vehicle modes to evade detection on scouting missions. In robot mode, he's also armed with a low-powered plasma blaster. highly efficent and capable of operating on long-range scouting missions for extended periods without refueling.

Weaknesses: Subject exhibits no known physical weaknesses

Downshift (white sedan)
Primary Function: Security Agent

Bio: Downshift takes his job in security and law enforcement seriously, but sometimes interprets his function too broadly. he dutifully makes his rounds to assure that whatever he's guarding is protected and then often goes out on his own to seek out potential infiltrators before they strike. This has gotten ownshift involved in several messy and legally questionable entanglements, earning reprimands from his commanding officers. Although they appreciate his enthusiasm and proactive attitude, most wish Downshift would just focus on his job.

Weapons/Abilities: Subject is fully trained in the latest law enforcement and military security tactics and electronic measures. He is also an expert in submission holds for disarming and incapacitating suspects. In vehicle mode, he's armed with two door-mounted lasers as well as a roof-mounted energy net launcher for capturing fleeing targets. Subject also uses the lasers in robot mode, along with a neural shock gun that disables targets by making it incredibly painful to move. It's painless as long as they stand still but becomes excruciating when they attempt anything else. The effect lasts for 3.6 breems* per blast.

Weaknesses: Subject often leaves his objective unguarded and vulnerable when he leaves to hunt down criminals.

* 1 breem = 8.3 minutes. A breem is also the equivalant of 1000 Astroseconds in TF time.

I'll jump back on later with Overdrives bio and possibly the Reflector Units. Screen is fuzzing up a bit so I better let it rest...

It does actually. :HALUC: It seems members of S.T.A.R.S are as rare as the Command/Control Centers today. The more I think back on 84-86', the more I'm becoming convinced that my two older brothers were in fact members. I vaguely remember something that could have been the Control Center. My brothers were a little disappointed with the cardboard and I think I remember my oldest brother feeling frustrated in not wanting to bother putting it together. He was disenchanted when they were looking it over. What do you expect for $6.50? And the membership didn't just send you the control center/command center. Members received other cool items. And I remember Hasbro did send us three posters for our ticket stubs from the 86' movie. My one brother who collected all Autobots did get all of the Autobots that were only available through mail order. He had Wheeljack, Mirage, Sunstreaker, Ratchet and I'd have to ask him but he may have the Omnibots as well. I'm not sure what they did with their control center and kit. Since they were disappointed in the control center, I wouldn't doubt it if it was thrown away or just stored carelessly and ultimately damaged. I know I was never allowed to touch it. I guess they kept that one S.T.A.R.S. member rule: to keep it a secret from their family. :-( I was so little back then... I wish I could have been able to play along.

@T-Macksimus: Thank you so much for those Bios on Camshaft and Downshift! I actually like Downshift myself. He looks kind of tough for being only a Toyota Celica. Some sources claim he's a Toyota Supra, but in one photograph I was able to read Downshift's rear plate and it reads Celica.

Besides I wasn't really welcomed to hang around with the boys while they played with their Transformers. "Boys Only" in the club house ya know? I'm thirty. It's on my profile page too. So I was pretty young back then. I was introduced to the cartoons and toys because of my older brothers. But I was also well versed in Star Wars, Star Trek, 80's Atari Games *Remembers those awesome Pizza Time Theater Days :x *, Super Nintendo, Marvel Comics and Superhero flicks at a young age as well. You're a Star trek fan, ever been to any of the conventions? How come they don't have Star Wars Conventions? Or do they? Yeah you would have been too young for me then.

Damn.

Yes I've been to a few Trek conventions and there are Star Wars conventions but these days the popular thing is Sci-Fi conventions.

They have a little of everything from Trek,SW B5 SG1 and anything you can think of.

Yeah at the Comic-Con this month the big announcement was the preview of the new Tron sequel called either, "Tron 2" or "Tron Legacy". I think they will go with Tron Legacy, because of the game titled Tron 2.0. I just found out about the movie the other day. But the movie isn't supposed to be released until 2011. But the concept art for the lightcycles would be cool as a Transformer Alt mode on Cybertron.

One question; Where's the seat? #^@% the rider.. Who needs em if you're a Transformer on Cybertron. :wink:

Kool pic.

I'm looking forward to it.

@sto_vo_kor_2000: So you were a S.T.A.R.S. member, did you play along with the storyline? And in part of the floor of the command/control center was there a board game? I'm curious to hear about how members used their memberships? Was all the info in those recruitment flyers, or did they send more literature on the S.T.A.R.S. interactive situation and storyline to members? :D

No I never really played along.

I was the only one of my friends to join up so no one I knew had any info.
Ther was a board game of sorts that was part of the packege if I remember right but I dont remember the details.

There was some subsequent info packs that came in the mail later on but I dont remember much about them.

So what happened to your membership items? Did they get all tossed out or sold?

Lost/Damaged in a flood......along with much of my original collection.

I moved out on my own when I was very young and I stored much of my collectable in the houses of 2 of my aunts.

My comics survived the flood but most of my TF's were destroyed by the water.

I'm very sorry. :-( But I think it's awesome you were a member of S.T.A.R.S., and I'm still hoping there might be more on Seibertron.com! :D I've seen a few on other Transformers web-communities.

I'm sure there are other members around here.
