Three quick suggestions for you
-Outback - Botcon 2005 Fallback
-Blades - Universe Voyager (or Legend if you want a smaller figure with a more faithful colour scheme) Blades
-Streetwise - Botcon G2 Redux Streetstar (G2 colours, but it is an official Streetwise figure)

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll take a look later at Outback (Fallback) and Blades.
Streetwise? Eh.... Yes, you suggestion is an official figure, but this is also the Generation One Toy Catalogue Project... A figure specifically given a G2 color scheme wouldn't fit...

I agree the Streetwise suggestion isn't a perfect fit, but unless you plan to go with a Kreon, there another fit that I can think of. You could repurpose a police car from another line, but I've never seen one that cries "Streetwise" myself

Well, I'm certainly not going with a Kreon, as even the ones that have (rudimentary) transformations are hardly what I would call "Classics" style figures.
But as for "Streetstar," he's an excellent update to the G2 figure (which is amusing, as that makes it an update to a figure that was never released!) but that's not what this project is about. If someone else wants to start a "G2 Classics Catalogue Project," by all means that would be awesome for G2 fans. And I don't have a lot of G2-related stuff, but if I can help with it, I'd be happy to. But that's not what this is.
For the G1 inspired Classics collection, I'd rather have to say, "No updated version," and put up a placeholder photo of the G1 toy, and live in hopes that a suitable figure becomes a reality someday.

Wasn't there a repaint of Hercules in Protectabot colors? Could you use that?

Not that I'm aware of... The only Hercules recolor I am aware of (and if I am wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me) is a Shattered Glass version in white and red.
However, even if there was a Hercules in Protectobot colors, I don't think I could consider it an acceptable Protectobot team for this project. I'm not above some reinvention when it comes to alt modes in "Classics" updates (Blurr and Kup getting Earth vehicles, or Perceptor becoming a scientific exploration vehicle, for a few examples.) But taking a team that is themed around being emergency service vehicles and presenting them instead as construction vehicles wouldn't work for me.
Even that aside, there is the fact that this project is going for a 1 to 1 correlation. This is the major reason that caused the official Classics Devastator to not be used even with the stated goal of using official product when possible. (Well, it didn't hurt that the official Devastator sucks... But if it was a bad looking team of six, I might have sucked it up and used them anyway, personal preference aside.)
There are only five Protectobots. If there was a hypothetical Hercules repaint, which member of the team would I leave out as a part of this project? And then, with only five members, how would they form their gestalt mode?
See? It wouldn't work.

Ahoy, everybody! The 1986 Autobot Article is more or less ready to go, I'll just wait until early this evening before officially unveiling it in case anyone has any last minute contributions.
Wreckgar, I did take your suggestions on Blades and Outback, so thank you for those. As for Streetwise, I was never sold on using the figure you mentioned for this project, for reasons I've already gone into. I did, however, decide to at least put in a footnote mentioning it.
Back later tonight with the reveal!
Those are all figures that already have modern representations presented as part of the project.
Powerglide has an actual "Classics" update, which I used. If by some chance that figure ain't your cup of tea, although I didn't picture it (as I am only picturing one figure for each character) I did in text mention the Bay-verse's Cyberverse figure as another official figure that is a popular repurposing.
Seaspray doesn't have an official "Classics" version, but I am content with repurposing the DOTM version as currently used in the project.
And finally... The one official figure you suggested, Legends Warpath. Is there something objectionable about the Deluxe figure? I am confused why you would make a recommendation in a case where an even better (subject to opinion, admittedly) official toy has already been used.
I do thank you for your recommendations, but they aren't really ones that are necessary. When looking at previously published articles, I would mainly hope for suggestions only for (a) figures currently only represented by placeholding photos of the G1 toy, or (b) characters who have had new and preferably official figures come out since the original presentation of an article that make for a better representation of the character.
Unless... Did I misunderstand your reason for posting? If you were suggesting figures for this project, then all of the above still stands. But if were you just hoping to foster conversation, and say, "Well, here's what I use!" then excellent! I'd welcome such side discussion in this thread, and just ask that it be more clear about being intended as such.

Okie dokie, folks. Here you go, the 1986 Autobots!
So next up will be the 1986 Decepticons. So, here's what I need help with. I could use photographs of the following:
If anyone has a third party Ratbat, and also happens to have the Frenzy I used with in the 1984 Decepticons article, photographs of the two of them together would be excellent. (I know there have been two official modern Ratbat toys, but a proper update to Ratbat should have a bat as his robot mode. The two official ones have humanoid robot modes and just vaguely batty vehicles as alt modes.)
Modern versions of the Predicons. (I know there's a few third party Predakings in the works. How far along are they?)
The Transformers Collector Club's Battlechargers -- Runabout (a.k.a. Over-Run) and Runamuck.
Gnaw
Also, I suspect I'll just have to go with placeholder pictures of the G1 toy, but if anyone has any suggestions for a modern take on Trypticon, Brunt, and Full-Tilt, I'd entertain them.

Fair enough about Streetwise. Happy to help with the others though.
Just a quick suggestion for Gnaw. Once again, a botcon toy may do, as they redecoed the Energon Sharkticon mold in G1 colours for a G2: Redux attendee set.

For Ratbat, you could use the FOC version. There's also the Masterpiece version that comes with Masterpiece Soundblaster.
There was a Classics legends class Trypticon release long a go but it was a repaint of Cybertron Scourge. The Shattered Glass Grimlock might work better.

I suppose the FOC one could work... Guess I was just trying to avoid FOC "Data Discs" for the Decepticon cassettes, since I hadn't used any previously. But I suppose that could work for the time being.
Still would love, if anyone could provide them, photos of that Ratbat with the figure I'd previously used as Frenzy, so I can continue the practice of picturing the figures sold as two-packs together.

Yeah, but are either of those cities?

Re: The "Classics" Generation One Toy Catalogue Project!
I'd second the Energon Sharkticon repaint as Gnaw, but another option could be the recent BH Megatron retool. He's certainly got (part) of the mouth for it.
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.
Also looking for Universe Repugnus and Overbite, Frostbite and Longhorn and any Webdiver toys.

Suppose I will go with the Botcon Sharkticon figure for Gnaw. I've found some photos I could swipe from online, but as always if anyone here has the figure and can provide me with photos specifically taken for this project, that is always a preference.

I let this project slide by for quite a while... but now I bring you a massive update! Based on the number of files in the folder I was using to store photos, 141 new photos have been added to the "Classics" Toy Catalogue!
Many of the existing pages have been updated, and two whole new pages have been created:
1986 Decepticons
This was a big one! (And it will need more updating in the future...)
Bonus #2: Characters From the Film Who Didn't Have G1 Figures, But Have Newer Figures
1986 was the big year to finish up! The first three years of the toyline ('84 - '86) were in many ways the most iconic ones, and are the best represented years in modern toylines. Future years of the project may be a bit more sporadic, and less comprehensive... But there will be more to come...
