For me they mean many things. First and foremost they are a remonder of my childhood imagination. So many great characters and multiverses.
They also are enjoyable as display pieces that are fun to set up and look at, as well as transforming them. It's almost a type of meditation for me.
The other thing that they are for me are memories of my Wife and I enjoying afternoons together shopping and finding new figures together. She doesn't collect them, but enjoys the fact that I enjoy them.

I am a child of the 80s and as many have already written, it is a reminder of the childhood. Did not have many of the G1 toys but read the comics a lot.
I started collecting these a few months ago. It all started when I was really drunk and logged in on ebay and bought the MP-08 Grimlock. I really like these Masterpiece figures and it is just these sorts and other similar third-party figures that have not yet come out as Masterpiece (Hercules a.k.a. Devastator is awesome) which I will collect. I think they are very nice to look at and are fun to transform.
Have a few G1 (the Dinobots and Ratchet) after which no one has released them as masterpiece or similar figures yet. Waiting however on PP05, I think it will be awesome.

Re: What do Transformers mean to you?
The original cartoon did nothing for me because I was already a teenager when it first aired so I was well into several other interests at the time. In the 90's when Beast Wars was on it really caught my attention and I watched some of it but didn't religiously follow it or get into any of the toys. The live action movies won me over and since I've always liked toys I was finally pulled all the way in. Now I have a ton of the toys going all the way back and, since it's so damn vast, there's like a never ending supply of cool stuff to chase after. I like that. I'm a fan of Prime. The show and the toys.
Speaking strictly of the toys, the transformation gimmick gets me every time. Love it.
