I'm glad they added the bad guy angle. The "surviving in a dino world" is cool in concept but couldn't really maintain a show since they've already established Terra Nova as an encampment. The dino angle would only carry the show if they were still building and didn't have the wall yet.
The rest of my comments are spoiler-based, so I'll summarize first. I love the setup. I have a few nitpicks, but the important thing is that I was entertained enough to keep following the episode.
Nitpicks:
1. Two plot points seem to contradict. They state this is not the same timestream as the 2149 Earth (the probe being the proof), but the Sixer's whole bit is "Control the past, control the future". Seems like one would preclude the other.
2. I know Terra Nova was the selling point, but I was fascinated by the Earth of 2149. Too bad we only saw a short bit of it.
3. The son's complete emotional turnaround. In 2149, he's as desperate to see his dad as the rest and happy to see him. But the moment things settle down, sarcasm and bitterness. Um... consistency please?
4. The ending scene. They set up a great mystery with the engravings. Let that sit as the first of a LOST style mystery? Nah. Just throw in exposition stating that the other guy's son made then as a FU shot.
