Well, by definition, an item considered to be a "holy grail" is something still being pursued by the collector. For me, I don't think there is anything more grailesque than some of the lucky draw figures. There are a few that I would prefer to kill for rather than purchase with money since they are so expensive.

There are a few, not particularly rare figures that I had wanted for a very long time before finally getting them. See, I'm a very broke collector, figures that cost anywhere over about $100 are hard for me to justify getting myself. There were always a couple expensive ones that I really wanted, though.
My "Grails" are mostly G1 toys I never had as a kid, that saw reissues making them available to me, smaller things like Perceptor and Stepper (who went from a toy worth a thousand dollars, to a shelf warmer in no time flat), and a couple of larger importance.
G1 Megatron was something not I, nor any of my childhood friends owned, so when I saw a TFC #6 Reissue a few years back for around $100, it was mine, no questions asked.
More recently, I finally managed to get a Fortress Maximus, another toy I've wanted for nearly as long as I can remember, had to pool together birthday money, call in some favours, and pull a bit out of my savings to get that together, but I did it.
For non-G1, another one I'm just particularly happy to own is a Car Robots Black Convoy, which I think I got about six years ago for about $45 MISB.
The holiest of grails, though, the thing I would love to own, but probably never will, as it's nigh-unattainable, is the combination of two very rare toys, Black Super Fire Convoy and Black God Magnus. If I were ever able to get my hands on a Black God Fire Convoy, I would probably consider myself done with collecting.

My favorite will be a custom Tarn that, hopefully, will be finished in a couple weeks. Of what I have now TFCC IDW Chromedome and the only original G1 figure I have after selling off my childhood toys for drug money like 14yrs ago, which is Gnaw lol. But encore or a new generations Sky-Lynx is my "grail" I guess of what I don't have.

So you're hoping that the cost of bail would be cheaper than the cost of the figure?

There's a special spot in my heart for Chromedome. In the '90s when my older cousin saw I was playing with Beast Wars Transformers he gave me his G1 toys and among them was Chromedome. He was missing his Stylor head and his guns but he was always such a cool car and it didn't matter because I could swap the head over from the Snap Dragon he gave me as well.
His collection was a little like mine, spanning a few different waves and lines some non-convential bots

Grails I own:
ehobby ghost and black Starscream set
G2 Scorpia
Grails to chase:
Black Zarak(not paying 3k for a toy
)
ehobby Fire Guts
Chronolabel Autocepter and Deceptor (the newer ones, with all the LEDs)
Grail I once owned and had stolen by a former friend and roomate:
Mirage's Boxes(I think that's who made it) General Lee Bumblebee custom repaint. I bought that at OTFCC in '04 in Chicago, my first TF convention. It is a gorgeous piece and I have searched ebay periodically for another, never to find one again. I miss it and feel more burned by that theft more than anything else my former roomy took.

I don't quite have the capital to even look in the direction of things like Lucky Draw or Prototypes.
I'm currently working through a CHUG/Neo-G1 cast so my current grails would be Henkei! Alert and Henkei! Smokescreen, without having to sell a kidney.

I think bail ACTUALLY IS cheaper than some! Depends on where someone's from!

Actually, some of the "CHUG" figures are every bit as awesome as any figure in ANY line. And Henkei! just gives you that little extra bit that makes an already great figure excellent. Even those guys are expensive though!

Once it is in your collection, it ceases to be a "holy grail". Once it is obtained, it is simply referred to as a possession.

So I'm the Cool Guy and/or Douche Bag that bought the Space Galaxy Micron team on eBay this week.
My grail is now that darn red micron bird, Wedge Shape. I've got a Space Galaxy team, I've got a Dragoyell, but I don't have that damn bird. There is something seriously wrong with this.
Please, someone, sell me your Red Bird Cool Dude Micron. I'll overpay like hell for it at this point because I have a problem.

Re: The "Holy Grail" of your collection?
The focus of my collection is animal based G1 Transformers, most of them were fairly easy to obtain but Deszarus was a real challenge, especially at a decent price so he is my holy grail.

I don't have Black Zarak so he is the grail I am chasing, but in all honesty I will never get him unless a reissue or KO without GPS appears.

grail
ɡrāl/
noun
noun: Grail; noun: Holy Grail; noun: the Grail; noun: grail; plural noun: grails
1.
(in medieval legend) the cup or platter used by Jesus at the Last Supper, and in which Joseph of Arimathea received Christ's blood at the Cross. Quests for it undertaken by medieval knights are described in versions of the Arthurian legends written from the early 13th century onward.
2.
a thing that is being earnestly pursued or sought after.
"profit has become the holy grail"
Origin
from Old French graal, from medieval Latin gradalis ‘dish.’
As I have stated, a person's grail can only be considered a grail item until it has been obtained. However, I will amend my statement; Even though a grail item does not remain a grail once it has been obtained by the collector (the pursuer), it could remain a grail item for other people who have not yet gained possession of the item.

can we just change the idea of this thread to, what was your grail (meaning youve obtained) and what is currently your grail (now seeking)? include both. problem solved.

How about this... We take this thread, along with a few others recently and create the thread 'things to beat to death, beat some more, call your relatives over to watch you kick the living crap out of, kick it until it's pulp, bury it, pour some concrete on it, tap dance on that, dig it up, hit it a few more times, and put a post it note on it to remember to bring it up later'
