Well I thought that was a fun episode with a dark twist. Firstly, the shades, does anyone think that they were only for those beginning episodes? I sure do (unless I missed him wearing them in the preview).
Secondly and most importantly, I was a little disappointed with the build up we received to masie Williams character (though admittedly, fan speculation did not help in the slightest) I'll have to re watch the episode again later as I'm sure her fate came without any warning, and not in the surprising good way. More of the "wait...when did that happen"
It sounds like it I didn't like the episode but aside from her character I did. I'm also becoming immune to Clara it seems as I just hear white noise whenever she starts acting like she knows better. I would love to have seen what her character would do in the old serials, like warriors of the deep (everyone dies!) Or Resurrection of the Daleks (Where Tegan reaches breaking point with all the death). Her views probably wouldn't be the same then.
I'm ranting I know. Still maybe my thoughts on masie will change when I see next week's episode and view the arc as a whole.

I thought it was a fun episode, (poor Heidi!) I chuckled a few times.
Good to see they finally addressed the whole why he chose Capaldi's face, as I'm sure there are some modern series fans out there who have still not accepted that it was addressed in the classic series.
And I love Maisie Williams, even though it felt like she was just channelling Arya Stark. I was disappointed she hasn't turned out to be someone from his past, but hey, that could still change next episode.
Overall though, good fun episode.

I completely forgot that point for a moment there, I enjoyed that flashback to the fires of pompei. Does that make Clara a poor mans Donna?
The part that made me laugh the most was when the doctor was trying to train them and then it cut forward a few minutes.

It was a good moment ... and then suddenly it was over and they're using real swords. It felt like they'd cut something out.
Of course the aftermath ... one guy knocked out, Heidi now passes out at the THOUGHT of blood and the village on fire.

Episode was a bit meh and... weird. Like, the previous episodes have all moved to and embraced more darker stories. This one seemed to bounce between that and Home Alone electric eels.
I also feel as though the face explanation was wasted here. It felt so insignificant for something as important as a reminder to save people. It also slightly felt as though this episode was put together just to include that revelation. Which would make that bit the highlight, but it sure feels a lot like an afterthought.
Speaking of revelations, how many can The Doctor have in forty-five minutes? Four? Six? Baby? Did anyone keep score? Not a fan of this episode.
I am however, a fan of those ridiculous sonic shades. Never leave that gorgeous face, shades. Live on.

I actually cheered when the shades were snapped.
To be honest, it felt like you could tell which parts of the story moffat wrote. Electric eel and deus ex machina medpack. Still, it was enjoyable. Though some more exploration on ishia, or whatever her name was, her premonition and abilities could have done with fleshing out a bit more. It's like they were thrown in as an afterthought to show why she went in the helmet. And her death was a bit abrupt and out of left field.
Personally, I would have left this as a stand alone episode, have a few more 2 parters and pick it up later, rather than go straight back into her story.
One question. If those medpacks never stop working and make you immortal, why isn't everyone in that army slapped with one on signing up? Then you have an immortal army. Would never be defeated or have to retreat.

I've seen that question raised a few times now. Most common answer I've seen is that the doctor changed part of it so it had that effect. Of course all I thought the doctor did was set it for human (unless it's implied that the effect on human physiology gives that effect)
Also shouldn't she be described as ageless as even the doctor said that accidents could happen and kill her. She's neigh on indestructible but can still die...It would just be really, really hard.
Also, bad news, the shades are back next ep.
EDIT: Burn beat me to the punch
Also should point out that people have asked why the doctor doesn't give Clara one of those chips as apparently she is essential to the series...I can't begin to describe why that is a bad idea.

The Doctor clearly explains that he was caught up in the moment, he was emotional, that's why he saved Ashildr, and once he'd regained his composure he realised what he'd done and the consequences it could have.
He even says that.

Makes sense.
I'd be happy with the glasses if they just gave them a little tech detailing. Just a little thing. Oh well.

I know, but I've read comments saying that he should do that to Clara. They basically don't like the news she's leaving and want her to stick around.

Yeah that's true
one of the weirdest complaints I saw was saying it wasn't historically accurate that the blacksmith was trying to get his daughter settled. Yes, complaining about that in a show about a guy who fly around in a blue police phone box. I think they can only push historical accuracy so far

Any father is going to try and get his baby daughter settled. It doesn't matter what era or who you are. Even if you hire someone else to settle her, you're still wanting her settled. Who came up with that complaint?

Someone on the ign review, in the comments, he also brought up the vikings-didnt-wear-horned-helmets thing that I've seen several other places.
It's quite daft when it's all entertainment really (it's been a while since I saw some of the historical period settings of the old serials so I can't remember how accurate they were supposed to be.)

Re: The Dr Who (and spin-offs) Thread *potential spoilers*
The Hartnel serials tried to be accurate, as they were aiming to be educational, and they could raid the BBC wordrobe for costumes and props to make things cheaper (I'm assuming). But it probably became less so once it moved on. Certainly the modern era is not going for 100% accuracy. That's reaching a stupidly pedantic level of complaints.

To be fair, Vikings didn't wear horned helmets. But it always happens because it's one of those cinematic flourishes that audiences have come to expect.

That, was quite a boring episode.
Oh look, The Doctor has inserted himself into someone's life, and changed it dramatically, now he has to witness the repercussions.
Yeah, boring. And they built the whole mystery of who Maisie Williams was playing way too much. That in itself was an incredible disappointment.

Another K9 spinoff? I think it may be time they understand that the only spinoff that actually worked for K9 was the Sarah Jane Smith Adventures...and he wasn't exactly a big part of that.
Haven't had chance to watch last night's episode yet, so I'll give my thoughts when I sit down and watch it

I don't think its a spinoff as such, just an attempt to ... hell I don't know what they expect to do with it. But to put K9 at the centre of a movie with the thought that it'll be similar to the grand scale of Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy ... I think they're setting their hopes way too high.

It would be like giving just R2-D2 his own movie (no c-3po) but I agree, I think they are expecting a bit too much from this

Great episode last night, although I'm sure it would've benefited from being shoved up a few episodes? It felt weird how The Doctor and Ashildr hadn't seen each other in a while, where as we witnessed them hanging about just last week. Would've probably worked better if there'd been a few episodes of distance.
Also, Clara-lite episode! It was about time. But I will admit that the scene where she did show up near the end made for a cute ending. If only she just showed up at the end more often.
ALSO, also, more sonic sunglasses. How I fear the day they must part.
