To be or not to be a Headmaster?

Weapon: No Weapon
It's funny how indecisive I am about this one thing. Back when it came out I got ahold of Universe Hardhead primarily to rage at over how it wasn't Mega-Octane instead, then probably sell later just to get it off my mind. Some time later Headrobots showed up and revealed their plans for a Headmaster upgrade for Hardhead, at which point saw a minute hope for the purchase I made.

Unfortunately I'm still stuck over what I want to do with all this now. For one, I could buy the Headrobots Hothead upgrade set and be able to enjoy a figure I would otherwise despise. I've never owned a G1 headmaster, even though the idea kind of appealed to me for the longest time, but I could never justify it because the toys were bricks. On the other hand the price for the upgrade set is a bit of a put off for what little you get, and no review I've seen so far has been quite capable of convincing me otherwise. Plus knowing how there are likely a bunch of others out there who are interested in the set, but don't have a Hardhead to go with it, makes me wonder how much I can get out of it if I sold it on Ebay(SCALPER MENTALITY, GO!).

So with all this in mind I'd like to hear some outside opinions/suggestions. Doesn't mean I'll actually listen to them, but do it anyway because I said so!

It call my memories about the Headmaster in animated. I must say that it is so classic but not popular.

Well, you could invest even more cash on a toy you say you don't like.
Or, I remember seeing it go for around $50, cash money in your pocket, on ebay if it was still factory sealed.

If you have no love for the toy, why do you think you're going to like it if/when the headmaster upgrade kit for it shows up? If no review has convinced you that the 30 dollars is worth it for something that drastically changes the figure then it sounds to me like you've already made up your mind.

I on the other hand, quite like Hardhead even now, and I'm going to enjoy him a lot more with his new head. But that's just me.

If you had no inital enjoyment of the figure, don't expect much if you get the upgrade kit.

IMO, the upgrade makes a whole worlds of difference. It's not just the head, but the shoulder cannon and twin rifles just make a lackluster figure into something pretty freakin awesome.

Prior to the Hothead upgrade I had zero interest in Hardhead as repaint of Onslaught. As soon as the upgrade was announced however I scoured every Wal-Mart around until I found one. Now that I have the upgrade I absolutely love the figure. As far as third party upgrades go $30 isn't bad. I say get the Hothead set, it makes all the difference in the world. If you still don't like him I'm sure someone would be more than willing to take the whole package off your hands.

That's the way I feel. The only problem was that I couldn't find one anywhere and don't have the cash right now for ebay (Santa has deep pockets this year).

I, myself, loved the Headmasters (and Targetmasters for that matter). I wish Hasbro would have a few Headmasters in their line-up.

I own most of the upgrade sets made by Fansproject, and I can say that I don't regret any of them, and quite enjoy most of them for what they provide. That said, there were a few I waited til they went on sale before I snatched them up because despite how awesome they were the prices pushed a little too much for my personal tastes to justify the level of enjoyment I thought I'd get out of them. That's pretty much how I feel in this case, but the way things look with this one I may not get the chance at a price reduction before it sells out.
Mkall wrote:If you had no inital enjoyment of the figure, don't expect much if you get the upgrade kit.

It's more of a personal bias I have against it for not being a Mega-Octane repaint. I've gone over this several times, but way back there was a thread where I brought up how the Onslaught mold would be perfect for a green and yellow repaint as Mega-Octane... then immediately got dissed in favor of it being better for Hardhead. And guess what happened a few months later? Hardhead repaint! I was frickin' pissed, but I picked the thing up anyway just for rage fodder. I freely admit it's a good mold, but this particular repaint felt like my idea was turned against me then shoved in my face. I'm not saying I wont drop this bias if I can make the figure different enough from Onslaught by giving him a headmaster and some good weaponry, I'm just torn on whether or not it's worth the equivalent of buying another Ultra class figure to make another one only so much better... at least from what I can tell.

I know that sounds hypocritical after what I said about getting the FP sets, but Hardhead is a more unique conundrum to me.

Buy the head. It is a big improvement.

You could sell now w/o the head for $50 - $60. Or you can buy the head for $30. Don't like it? Wait awhile after the heads are sold out and make an even bigger profit selling them together.

I found myself in a similar predicament a couple of years ago. Got a G1 Ratchet as a kid. Played with it a bit but the no head thing sucked. For same reason, I wouldn't buy G1/Encore Ironhide even though I loved his character in the cartoon. Then 2 years ago, I took a chance on the custom head set you see on Ebay a lot. Tried it on my old Ratchet and it was a vast improvement.

Not long after, I bought an Encore Ironhide and a new Encore Ratchet because my old one was faded and off colour with the head set. G1 Ironhide + head is now one of my alltime favourite Transformers.

Why not splash out on the Headmaster head? It will either greatly enhance the toy in your eyes as the custom heads I bought or you can charge a bomb, knowing some idiot will happily pay for the chance to buy Hardhead and the head set together.

Headmasters would make great toys for the Masterpiece line. These Headmasters would have more detail, more articulation, and be bigger.

I'm with Mkall on this one... if you're not into it as is, & iffy on the Hothead upgrade (even with the reviews), just get rid of it. Plenty of people looking for one online willing to shell out some dough (I was one of them). I missed out when they got clearanced at Walmart last year... and even remember my wife encouraging me to pick it up then for cheap, but I didn't think I'd want to get the Hothead upgrade. :BANG_HEAD:

I also really really like Hardhead, after receiving him in the mail this week. His lighter colors are really striking, and a nice contrast to Henkei Onslaught.

And I know I'm going to like him even more with the Hothead upgrade coming in tomorrow from BBTS!

I sure did! Thanks... he has a happy new home, & looks great. ;)^ I think I actually like this redeco of the mold as much as the Henkei Onslaught version.

I also got my Hothead upgrade today... and realized that I don't own any screwdrivers small enough to remove Hardhead's original head, so I convinced the wife to run out to the hardware store with me before dinner so I could do the head swap. Looks even better! I actually like the weapons / accessories even more than the new head (which I do in fact like).
