I don't understand Hasbro's underwhelming reaction to G.I. Joe's 50th birthday.
Whether it's not sending staff to the latest Joelanta convention or bringing out all the
bells and whistles to celebrate G.I Joe's 50th birthday.
I guess this is how Transformers will be treated when it's 50th birthday will come around.
I mean. How many toylines get to celebrate 50 years worth of shelf life.
Only 4 other toylines are over 50 years old. G.I. Joe, Barbie, Lego, Batman, Superman.
We live in a strange time when Hasbro has an easier time selling Transformers, My Little Pony, The Littlest Pet Shop, then G.I. Joe.
Without that magic 1980's G.I. Joe money Hasbro wouldn't have Transformers, My Little Pony, and the Littlest Pet Shop.

I don't think Hasbro considers this the 50th. They only count RAH version of the Joes from the eighties.

Honestly, I think it doesn't have a whole lot of appeal because it's too close to real life. We've been at war for over a decade (assuming you are from the US), and still at it with GWOT and proxy wars ala Cold War 2 and perhaps parents and kids are not thrilled with a by and large military themed toy line.
There just isn't that much you can do to it to make it "pop" so to speak. At the end of the day it is just men with guns who ride in vehicles. I am the opposite, I loved and still love GI JOE. I would admit that it influenced my own military service. Relatively recently, I loved the fact that Sideshow made some detailed 12" figures themed at adult collectors but same thing, it died due to lack of sales and interest.
