Do you Think America is Ready For a Black President
Do you Think America is Ready For a Black President
As a African-american It was hard for me to take the idea seriously Because honestly I know rasicm still exist today. But in all honestly Barack Obama is one of the best potential democratic canidates(Hillary Clinton Scares me more then Bush.)The South is the Big question mark. They are the ones who reelected that genius back in office and will they south support a black canidate? Honestly I still have to find where Obama stands on alot issues but he looks good on paper but I'll take Jeb Bush over Hillary.

The cynic in me says no, but realistically skin colour would not be a bigger issue than the candidate's political stance and general behaviour. The same goes for a female president.

I don't know the Political system of sweden, or the Minority rate but do you think that Sweden could have a Black political leader.

The question shouldn't be "are we ready for a black president?", it should be "are we, as a nation, finally mature enough to look beyond a person's skin color, and/or gender, and see them for the potential they bring?".
I don't like Obama's stance on abortion, so I doubt I could support him.

I certainly hope so! I'm excited that Obama's even in the runnings. Is it imaginable for Hillary or Obama to accept the other as a vice presidential running mate, or would they need to balance the ticket with a more conservative partner (who would just happen to be white and male)? I'd vote for the two of them together in a heartbeat. I'd rather have Obama as President, since he opposed the war from the start, whereas Hillary bowed to the pressure to fall in line.

One difference Of opinion is all it takes to lose your support. Doesn't the nation have more important issues then birth control. It's the same short sightedness of a nation that forced us into "TERM 2". The nation agreed with the Now presidents stance on gay rights now where in the middle of the longest war in american history and more Iraqi's and American's die by the day. You tell me whats more important Gay people having the right to vote or a actually Exit strategy?

Yep. One of the more prominent ministers happens to be about as "ethnic" as one can be while still wearing a suit and tie. Funnily enough she's minister of integration and equality... It must be said, though, that the vast majority of our political leaders are white. I'm not sure what people would think about a prime minister born outside of Sweden but I suppose it'd all boil down to what he or she is like.
You can bet that the racists and nazis would be outraged, though.

I'm a Obama supporter. If he runs for pres or even as running mate with Hilary, I'll be voting for him.

I have no problem with a black President, or even a female President, or even a black female President. But I still wouldn't vote for Obama, he's too liberal for my tastes and he has no experience. Hillary makes me want to die a little inside though.

Agreed-- the real problem is, both of them don't have any real experience, but for some reason, they're being hailed as the saviors of the US. However, Obama's got marginally more than Hillary-- he actually did something prior to his senatorship-- but he's still a neophyte in the public sector.
What bothers me is that Obama, although he speaks well, and I admit I like his charisma, has followed Dick Durban, the most disgraceful represenative here in Illinois, in every vote, while Hillary, a housewife before her shopping for a political seat, seems just to run on popularity, speaks with what is the trend that will get her own votes, but yet doesn't give any strong opinion and hasn't done anything notable in her years as a senator. And, in all this, people act as if they're some masters of the political arena.
I don't like Bush in every sector, especially his social policies, but I would probably take him over Obama, and at least Hillary, as President. Although he's not the greatest politician, I somehow get the feeling he greatly believes in everything he says and does as good for America, and doesn't really seem to hide what his objectives are, so I at least know what I'm getting... or fighting against.

Being a southerner myself, I really don't think it bothers as many people as groups like the KKK & "yanks" that still like to keep the "deep south" stereotype around because they think it's funny. But anywho, yeah, I don't think I'd have a problem with a black president. Hillary Clinton, though.....I really don't see her as being good for much of anything. Just my personal opinion.

Someone must be running the odds. Which will come 1st a non white president or female. In most cases in other countries id say money is on a woman.

In order.
True, but you have to admit it is less than it used to be. People still are racist (all groups have it too) ,but it tends to be more private now. It is much less socially acceptable now.
The deep South (Ak/La over to NC/GA, not FL) only has 79 electorial votes. Yeah the election was close but it is just as accurate to say that the Western states reelected him. Just my 2 cents (I didn't vote for either of the main party canidates).
There are alot of people who wouldn't vote for a black canidate ,because they are black, as wrong as that is. However since most of the people in politics who happen to be black tend to be liberal ,that would loss them votes too. I hope that the second reason would be more prevalent, not sure though, and I've gotten a little cynical in my old age.

About Barack Obama ,I don't really know anything about him, so I can't say one way or another about him personally. I probally won't because he is running through the Democrat (Republicans have my near equal distane), though I have seen people who run through the main parties who I would vote for.

I agree, there is a lot about Bush I do not like. However, I'm not going to sit here and blame every little thing on the President which seems to be the prevailing sentiment just about everywhere.
I don't even do that with Clinton, and he turned into a running joke.

A Black president wouldn't bother me personally. However, I think we as a nation are far from ready and/or accepting of a Black president.
We say we're progressive, and in many ways we are, but not this far yet.
There's just too many people who will focus on his skintone, not his stance. (Though a few will have problems with that, or include it with his skintone.)
I do think it could seriously lead to a racial divide. (Or a bigger one than present at least.) I just don't know if either side can handle it right now.
He seems like a hell of a guy, and I know he's busted his ass to get where he is, but America just isn't ready.
...and having Bush in there goes to prove that we're even more backwater than we originally thought.

So because people voted for Bush that makes them racist? I think you're letting your hatred for Bush cloud your judgement, and frankly I find it insulting.

Oh no. Not at all. I didn't imply that, nor did I say Bush was racist either. (I think having a wife who's Mexican proves otherwise.)
I meant he's an idiot. He's pushing the nation backwards, not forwards. Forward thinking people would be able to handle a Black president and to have our country evolve. These idiots that kept letting Bush in control are the ones at fault.
It's because of them that we'll never really see a good future. He's put us in so much debt it's insane. So many jobs are lost, the rest of the world hates us.
It's not a racism thing, it's the fact that he's turned us back into the stone age that bothers me.
That probably won't make you feel any less offended, but at least you know I haven't called anyone racist.

They way that was worded made it sound as if though though you were racists if you voted for Bush.
Clinton wasn't an angel in the unemployment department either. He put a lot of small businesses out of business with his huge tax increases.
You can't have it both ways. To leave a surplus that Clinton did, he hiked up the taxes to the hilt, especially on small businesses.

This is getting extremely off topic so as far the war and Bill Clinton lets agree that war is bad and Bill wasn't perfect. OK with that said can we return to the topic or if someone wants to discuss those points further make another thread lord knows the Philosopher's forum could use some more threads.
