Star Trek!
Ok, a few of us derailed a thread about the difference between Hot Rod and Rodimus and started talking about Star Trek. Actually, I derailed the thread. So here we can talk about it.
We were discussing Klingons and Cardassians, about who was better, and went on from there.
My vote is for Cardassians.

I didn't watch this either, so don't feel bad.

I dunno, I thought The Voyage Home was a lot cooler than First Contact.

That one is very close behind. You have to love the 80s cheesiness of it. But First Contact is PERFECT.
I think Kahn is about the same level of Voyage Home.

No. No. The Wrath Of Khan is the best of the six original movies.
I found something to like in all ten of the movies, but the Next Generation movies were definitely hit or miss.
Generations was a nice passing of the torch, but considering the path the movies would lead to...wasn't much to pass that torch to.
First Contact has it's moments, but it drags a little.
Insurrection was definitely a good film, beautiful scenery, but a little slow.
Nemesis wasn't perfect, (and I seem to be the only one who liked it) but it was definitely a nice wrap to the series, and I thought Data went out as a hero.
I also noticed something about the six original movies...they're basically two different trilogies in one set.
1, 5, 6: Exploration, not only of space, but of the human spirit.
2, 3, 4: What I like to call "The Spock" trilogy.
I still say, out of all of the Star Trek series and movies...Data's the most compelling character, and probably the most human of them all. Oh sure... he was a machine, but he made us think, and asked thought provoking questions to get to the heart of humanity and he understood it more than even he knew. He saw life with a childlike quality and that made him the best person in the whole thing.

I agree that most of the Next Generation movies aren't that great. But First Contact is. The dialogue, the suspense, the plot...I think even Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 94% or 96%, so it was also very critically acclaimed.
Out of the originals, I am torn between Kahn and Voyage Home, though the tones of both movies are completely different. I can only imagine the audience's reaction to Spock dying ( I was minus two years old in 1982).
Years ago I wondered why they never made a DS9 movie. In my opinion, that is the best Trek show, hands down! But now I know that the show ended how it should've, and there wasn't really anywhere else for the story to go. I tell you, the last three or four seasons of that show was some of the best television ever. The Dominion War was better than anything Next Generation ever came up with. But I liked the darker Trek.

I liked how Spock is percieved as a hippy. Too much "LDS". And I still love the "where are the nuclear wessels?" bit. That was the lighthearted ST movie, one they really needed after Spock and Kirk's son getting killed.

Actually, I rather liked this one. I could have done without the whole clone thing, which has beend one to death in sci-fi, but all in all, not a bad way to end Next Gen.
First Contact so owns over Voyage Home, the two can't even compare. They're not even in the same level. I liked Khan, but it quickly loses it's appeal. I actually find that The Undiscovered Country is my favorite. Probably the best banter between Kirk and Bones I've ever seen.

The Jem H'adar (or whatever) kick ass! Remember that episode where a team of them is stuck on that planet, with the dying Vorta? They are extremely low on Kytracel White and are losing their sh*t. Great episode.
I've been a fan of the show since I was 12. I started watching in the fifth season. At that time I liked the character episodes and disliked the war episodes (the last season was not my fave at the time). My favorite character is Odo, followed by Garak. I'm not a huge Klingon fan, but there was a great episode about that old Klingon that wanted to go out in battle, and everyone thought he was a senile old fart and made fun of him. He ended up saving the day.

Undiscovered Country is definitely the weakest of the original movies (I don't remember much of the first film, so I can't say about that one). It was boring and uninspired. The fifth one... eh, it was ok. The cat stripper attacking Kirk always gets a big laugh out of me.
The Search for Spock doesn't quite qualify as an actual movie with me. It's just a bridge between Kahn and Voyage Home. But it's not bad. Pretty decent, actually.
I love the fact that Kahn is based off an old episode. I think First Contact is a better movie, but Kahn has a big appeal to me. The thought of some obscure character in Kirk's past coming back to haunt him is great.

I turn 23 on Sunday.
I started watching the original series when I was 14, in 1999. In fact, DeForest Kelly died the next month. I became a huge fan instantly of the series. I started watching DS9 in 1997. I guess I started watching Voyager at that point as well (not a huge fan of that show).

Is that the episode where those aliens make the weapons too hot to touch? If so, it's been years since I've seen it. The Klingons and Kirk go to a planet where the people are peaceful, and Kirk is trying to get the Klingons from setting up a base there, right? The Klingons start some crap with them, while Kirk doesn't understand why the people don't seem to care and think they are safe. Then, during the battle, the aliens make their weapons like 300 degrees or something. Is that it? If so, I don't particularly remember the Klingon actors' appearance (I'm not good with remembering faces)

I sometimes catch the episodes on G4. They play the entire episode, which is about 50 minutes or so, not the 42 minutes you usually see. I started watching the show when they played it every night on Sci-fi. Now they barely play it. I have a bunch on VHS. Maybe it's time to break out my old tapes and watch some Trek. A while ago I was in a Trek craze and watched DS9 for two months straight. It was crazy. Needless to say, I burned out for a while.
