I would say you can fully enjoy the movie without reading the comics.
Of course with all adaptations, you must check out the original source. Scott Pilgrim is seriously one of the best comics ine the past 10 years. It captures everything I like about comics, music, and video games.

As irrational and stupid as this is going to sound, I hated this movie. Like, honest to god hated. Like if someone gave me a print of it I would revel in it's destruction. I'm not trying to ruin anyone's buzz over it, honestly, but this movie made me so angry, and in general I'm not that irrational of a person. But I sat watching this for two hours of my life that I'll never get back, two hours of Michael Cera 'acting' and every girl in the movie having a more masculine voice than, for what? A bunch of lame video game cliche "jokes"? I mean, at least I knew when he was really in to playing with his band, because he emo-stomped with much enthusiasm.
Look, I know, ok? And like I said to begin with, I'm really sorry if I'm hurting any/everybodies feelings with this, but this movie was probably the worst thing of all time. I got dragged to see it by my girlfriend who loved it, and I guess I'm tired of pretending that it didn't make me want to rip my eyes out and shove them into an electric pencil sharpener. So, in the interest of my own well-being, better you guys be upset with me for thinking different than she does.
Don't get me wrong, alright? I love fun, I love comics and movies and cartoons and all kinds of fun things. I love music, I've played in bands, and I'm a bass player. Above all else, I love fun, and I like to have fun and be entertained. Is this rant stupid and irrational? You bet it is, but it's how I feel. So, sorry once more, but thanks for listening.

I saw the movie yesterday. It's easily in my top 5. Yes, they changed a crap-ton from the books, but it really doesn't get in the way. (I would have liked to see them fight at Honest Ed's, though) And some of the stuff they added (The Seinfeld reference, "I'm in lesbians with you" etc) was great.

The thing that got changed the most was the ending, since nothing from Finest Hour was included in the film, since O'Malley was still working on it while the film was being done.

Not true. Some of it was changed (Ramona took Envy's place, Knives took Ramona's place, they didn't fight inside Ramona's head, Scott's second sword etc.) but much of it was the same, it had as many changes as the rest of the movie.
The ending was SUPPOSED to be different, but O'Malley gave Wright his notes for Finest Hour during filming, and it seems they had an effect.

It makes alot of obscure NES gaming references that will likely fly over most people's heads. (people bursting into coins like river city ransom, the bands are named after NES titles.) I can see how this could be a cult hit, but it's something that likely won't fly with the mainstream audience as it's like a giant inside joke that they just won't get or appreciate. (Such as my girlfriend whom I took with didn't get most of the gaming references, and found the movie equally average as I did.)
If you hate Michael Cera, you will not like him here as he plays the usual awkward dork he always plays. He's probably the least funny part of the movie, and he's unfortunately the title character. (What Brandon"Superman" Routh does made me laugh more in his brief role than Cera does.)
In the end I wouldn't recommend rushing out to see Scott Pilgrim. I'd say rent it. (and fast forward thru the first hour as there's tons of unneeded filler.) It has alot of fun ideas, but the snail pacing really drags down what could been a great film. I will likely go and read the graphic novel as I imagine it's probably more entertaining than the movie was.

Being in the target demographic, I'm still overwhelmed by the awesomeness of this movie. I haven't had this much fun with a movie in a while and this now tops the A-team as my favorite movie of the summer.

Shadowman wrote:So, Dagon, you never actually said what you didn't like about the movie. Just a couple cracks about Michael Sera and video game jokes. (I'm not sure what an "emo stomp" is but when he was playing he was headbanging) Were you even paying attention?
Well, ok, let me try again then. I was paying attention, thus how I was able to formulate my dislike of the movie.
In addition to not liking the main character at all, and finding the humor to be unfunny, which in a comedy is usually not a good thing, I found the story uninteresting. I know I've never read the comics but since the movie did nothing to capture my interest I doubt that I would read the comics now in an attempt to like, increase my enjoyment by banishing my ignorance.
I didn't really find any of the characters to be compelling or interesting, and I found the story to be less than impelling. I don't expect every movie I see to be a landmark of the cinema, but I'd like to be interested and entertained more often than I am disinterested and bored. This may be a real reach, but I had zero expectations for Inception, and yet I was interested and entertained by it. My expectations for Scott Pilgrim were even lower, and I was neither interested nor entertained.
And it was so formulaic and contrived. Like, could there be another cliche or whatever crammed into it? Really, like when Ramona kept saying ex's as opposed to ex boyfriends, was I really not supposed to see the one ex girlfriend coming?
I will give the movie this much: so far, there doesn't seem to be the backlash of "you only don't like it because it's popular not to like it," the stupid ROTF counter argument. I didn't like this movie not because it's cool not to like it, but because I didn't like
a)the main character/lead actor
b)the jokes it makes, a central element of a comedy
c)the story
d)the video game references, which seemed to be the bulk of the story
e)most of the other references it made, and the idea that it was basically a parade of teenage cliches
f)the other characters weren't interesting to me either
I will go so far as to agree with whoever said they'd rent it (sorry, I've already forgotten who said it. Sorry!) If we had rented this, at least I could have occupied myself with other things during the plentiful boring parts.
I also know that despite my original intention of not raining on people's parades, I've basically done exactly that. And while I'm sorry for doing so, I still didn't like the movie.
