Narnia 3: Fox, I am disappoint/people who edit posts for no reason suck

Postby Aluus » Sun Dec 12, 2010 4:13 am

I'll wait a few posts to post spoilers, but if you've seen this you know what I am talking about. Even if you ignore the changes made to the story it's just not a very good movie. Compared to the first two that disney released, this one feels... cheap. Fox made this one and... well this is gonna sound harsh, but it was direct-to-video quality.

I saw it last night and I liked it. Not as much as the first 2 but I did enjoy it. The first 2 where epic and where pretty voilent for a PG movie. But not this one. This one IS PG. The other ones sat at the border of PS and PG-13. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I want Disney back!!! :BANG_HEAD:

I don't think they had much to work with, I tried to read the books after I saw the first Narnia movie and I gave up on them halfway through VotDT. It was just a series of random events that didn't go anywhere or add to the story at all. Maybe it did after I gave up on it, but it still took too long to get there.

The only ones I haven't read are VOTDT, and the one after. The last one is freaking awesome though. It ties everything together...so I remember.

Okay, spoiler time.

Seeing as the book didn't have a clearly defined villain/good versus evil story, they added this mysterious people devouring green mist, which they eventually tied to "dark island" (the island in the book where dreams come true, even bad ones.) In order to vanquish said mist, they are traveling around now collecting 7 magic swords given to narnia by Aslan, and SOME HOW, these swords are all in the possession of Telmarine lords (you know, those guys who invaded narnia and conquered it, forbiding any and all things narnian) whom Caspian has set out to find. They have to place all 7 of these swords on Aslan's table to end the spell that is causing the mist. No mention of question of who cast said spell btw...

Throughout their quest, the mist tempts various characters, rather openly too, unlike the subtle theme of temptation in the book. Example: Lucy has poor self-image and self-confidence now, and is tempted with a spell that will turn her into Susan who apparently she now envies above all others for her beauty. The mist continues to tempt others throughout the movie, playing tricks on their minds, the most prominent being Edmund seeing the White Witch with her constantly trying to tempt him into being her king.

This all leads up to a confrontation with the mist at dark island, where the final lord warns them that the mist can make all their fears real and warns them against thinking them. Edmund panics and the mist brings his fear to life... a sea serpent... Here he is, all movie long having to face the white witch, and his biggest fear is a sea serpent mentioned once earlier in the movie. I guess randomly tossing in a fight against a giant sea serpent at the end was truer to the story than temporarily reviving the white witch...

Basically, Fox created a movie with a stand alone storyline and then hosed it down in Narnia juice in my opinion. A lot of the material from the book was dumbed down for the kids (the scene where Aslan frees Eustace from the dragon spell is turned into Aslan scratching his claws in the sand; that's right, the jesus allegory lion's salvation of the ever-annoying Eustace Scrubb is turned into a cat burying a turd in the sand!)

All in all, it's a passable adventure film, but not nearly as epic as the first two by any rights.

I felt the movie was great. Sorry to disagree with the OP. I thought Prince Caspian was a bloated film that dragged on in the middle.

I'm not attached to the books cause I haven't read them. I get the attachment cause I read comics and want those adapted as faithful as possible. That may cloudy those who've read the books I suppose. I didn't read Hellboy but thought the movies were good regardless of any changes they might have made.

If one is a fan of fantasy/adventure films then I think Voyage of the Dawn Treader is going to be good entertainment.
I hope it finds some holiday legs for the North American market. Luckily its global numbers are strong. Fox did botch the marketing of this it seems and/or opened it too early in December. I'd like to see The Silver Chair now. Eustace grew on me as a character and the wiki entry says he and Jill(who is mentioned by name at the end of VOTDT) are in that book.

I give the movie a solid: B+

I feel meh about it, strayed way too far from the book, and you can tell that Walden Media pulled out of the movie.

On another note, I love how they're saying it's good by saying it's nominated for a Golden Globe in the newest commercials, and yet the Golden Globe has nothing to do with the movie, it's for best original song

I'm watching the second one now, and I'm asking myself "why?" Why did they make the third one suck so much? I thought it was OK, whne I saw it, but now when I watch the second one, VOTDT is NOTHINGG sompared to this one! How can any one NOT say the second one is the best? It's the darkest, most voilent PG movie I have ever seen! And these pieces of **** critics say that the third one is almost as good as the first? The first one is much better than the third one, and the second one just murders all IMO. It had mice slitting 3 people's throats in like 2 minutes of the movie, a guy gets his legs cut off, then his head, an army is slaughtered within the closing gates of an enemy base, people get crushed, almost every one dies, and it's all in a PG movie! How is that not awesome!? What do we get in the third one? I sea monster. I will say that the first movie did the best job in setting the atmosphere, but the second one did the best with everything else. The third one felt cheap and like they didn't give a damn. I can't believe I'm saying this...again but I wish Fox hadn't bought the rights from Disney.

Plus, the first 2 always had one scene with a creepy atmosphere, the first one: Aslan's sacrifice. The second one: The warewolf and hag's ritual to bring the Wite Witch back. The third one had none of that.

It seems the movie is getting some good word of mouth. It's been having solid weekends and its weekdays have been strong. No doubt due to schools being out and many people being off work.

It now seems it has a better than fair chance of crossing the $100m mark in the North American territories. It's also doing really well overseas. It's made over $200m world wide. So, despite the underwhelmeing North American total to date(no doubt due to Fox's poor marketing) it may yet salvage a chance for the 4th Narnia to be made, The Silver Chair.

Oh, YES! This movie gave me the most mixed reactions of any Narnia film.

On one hand like the first two films, it was very good.

On the other hand, unlike the first two films, I got a major complaint about it: Least. Book-Accurate. Narnia film. EVER!

I had complaints about the first two films' lack of book-accuracy, but this one takes the cake!

It's like someone wrote out a timeline of the book's plot, chopped it to pieces, and then reattached them together in a mixed up order. Not to mention that this book was the only one in the series to not have a primary villain; meaning that it's more of an adventure story than a battle. But this movie takes a minor subplot of the book (which involves one evil force that is both encountered and defeated within a single chapter) and raises it to be the primary focus of the film, creating an antagonist that was otherwise nonexistant within the book's plot. :BANG_HEAD:

Still, though, there is one change made from the book to the movie that I gotta say was just awesome: Dragon vs. Sea Serpent! :-B 8) 8) 8)

But the major flaw of this film was its varying pace.

I hate to say it, but the old BBC mini-series episodes of this book were better than this.

Okay, who was anal retentive enough to edit my title because they dislike internet memes? I changed it back, but seriously, anonymous editing just to add an "ed" at the end...

In case you are unfamilar with the meme, here's an encyclopedia dramatica link. May be nsfw given that it IS encyclopedia dramatica...

Narnia 3 has passed the $100m mark US domestic and has $102m now and is over $370m worldwide!!!
Hoping to see it pass $400m as it begins opening up in Japan where Narnia 2 aka Prince Caspian made $30m so it is in play.
Would love for a Narnia 4 to happen!!

Chronicles of Narnia 3: Voyage of the Dawn Treadercrossed the $400m worldwide mark last weekend. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=narnia3.htm

Not sure how much more it'll gross. The irony is that Japan added some $25m to Prince Caspians bottomline but due to the quake/tsunami the country isn't exactly going to be lining up at the box office. I know we all wish the best for the country.

With the film having crossed this mark and only being $19m away from Caspians ww figure the odds of a sequel get better.

Voyage of the Dawn Treader came out on video this past Friday. I picked up a copy in hopes the sells would cement the discussion that Walden Media is having with Fox. Apparently Walden Media is saying they want to do The Magicians' Nephew next, skipping The Silver Chair, which is the locigal one after VOTDT.

Anyone else picking up the DVD??
