Critics everywere said that Sucker Punch sucked. I love that movie. Sucker Punch FTW!
Critics everywere said Twilight was great. I never whent to go see it because our teacher forced us to read the books, and I hated them. I often dozed off. If your going to make a story about vampires and werewolves, don't make it a girly romance! You haven't suffered until you've been forced to read Twilight. or at least follow along
Critics loved it though, and it now has legions of fans. That doesn't mean I have to like it. I never listen to Critics. they are wrong 98.9% of the time to me, but can be 100% Right to others. It just depends on what YOU like.

I guess a review can be useful, but one that tries to expose both aspects (positive and negative) of the product. It doesn't give me my opinion, but it will give me some information that I can then use to form my own.
As I do, for example, with TF figures.
I agree mostly with Burn on the subjective aspect, for the rest.
A good example would be Titanic. Can't stand the thing.
I think Di Caprio's acting is awful. BUT it won truckloads of prizes and awards.
Critics LOVED it. I, especially now that they're bringing it back in 3D, still hate it.
It just goes on and on..

I understand what you're getting at, but considering the opinions of other people is hardly letting someone else think for you. Aside from that, I've discovered far more things thanks to the mention of critics than I've ever been shied away from things because of them. I don't really think that anyone really, really internalizes what critics say and then bases their decision completely on that opinion.
Critics actually do know waht they're talking about, even though it makes us so much edgier when we decry their opinions because they conflict with our own. Unless it's TF movies, of course. The only reason people wouldn't like those is because of what critics say.
Just sayin' Burn.
Anyway, James Camerons' megamovies. Titanic and Avatar? They're ok, but not as earth changing as critics try to say. Avatar at least was interesting, once. And Thomas Pyncheon. Terrible writer, terrible.

I reckon there was a huge budget for payola to pay off all the fantastic reviews that critics gave that movie. I mean.....from what i gleaned from Rotten Tomatoes and many other sources, i thought i was going to see a movie that was to be the beginning and end of all that was righteous ,epic, beautifull , totally awesome and ground breaking.
I didn't see any of that. I was lead to believe that it was the single greatest accomplishment by human kind and the single greatest phenomenon in the known universe. Even more spectacular than it's very creation itself.
I didn't see any of that.

It's easier not to think for myself. Without the critics to tell us what we should like or dislike there would be only chaos, is that any way to live?

See, I get what you're saying. But I like what Va'al said, a review should look at both sides. It seems these days a lot of critics just give their personal opinion, which is all well and good, and they're entitled to it, but call me crazy, if they're going to review something they should do the review from an unbiased perspective.
And that's probably why I don't give a toss about critics any more, a lot of them show their bias now.

There where only like 10 TFs in the whole movie. The Autobots don't come until halfway through the movie, then disappear until the last 10 minutes. There where too many humans. The plot was: Giant alien transforming robots come to earth to buy some glasses off eBay. The last fight scene was only 10 minutes long and the majority of it was Sam running to a building. The movie had little to nothing to do with TF's at all. Megatron was only in it for the last 10 minutes as well. That's all I can think of for right now. I guess you'll have to hunt me down now. Meet me where you want me, but when you do, you'd better be strapped!

On the other hand, I loved the Toy Story movies, which were universally awesomed by critics.
But don't beat critics for liking only "artsy" films. They're not all art house goons. Ebert gave praise to Evil Dead 2, Mortal Kombat, Beavis and Butt-head Do America, and Spider-Man 2 among others.

In a Galaxy Far Far Awry issue 1: Serial Fiction Sideshow now for sale.
Issue 2: Home Sweet Home Invasion also for sale.
Back issue 3: Technophobia coming soon. And you can help!

True, but at the end of the day, a review that contains to definative yea or nay is useless as a review. Car companies spend how much money annually on new car modals, and not every one of them is like, car of the year or the Motortrend Top Pick. Not everyone gets a gold medal. And trying to be just in the middle about everything leads nowhere: a movie review that cuts straight down the center so as not to upset anyone would essentially states "A movie was made about __. It is in theaters now." And THAT would probably upset people for saying it's in theaters now, when the critic saw it at an advance screening.
Absolutely, a review should be more fair than lop-sided. Even if a critic puts out a level, even review and then gives the movie some kind of rating, like Three Stars, that's a biased rating, because it shows where the critic would place it in relation to other moveis they've reviewed. If we're talking about critics who lambast films and their fans, that's kind of a different story. There's no real excuse for that.

An example of a bad review: [Insert Movie Name here] is a horrible, shoddily made piece of crap and anyone who likes it has less brainpower than a dust mite.
And there you have it.
Currently on a quest to collect as many Unicron Trilogy toys as possible...maybe even complete the collection...

Hmm...where have I seen this before...
Oh yes, if we substitute Revenge of the Fallen for x, the equation equals Roger Ebert.
