Double Spy: Punch/counterpunch

Postby zfeakye » Mon Aug 17, 2009 12:46 am

This is my very first custom transformers which i have done up quite some time ago... :D
done outta a sunstreaker piece...i used back the sunstreaker's head with the "ears" shortened.
For counterpunch's head, i used a KO voyager movie 1 OP to fuse it together...with the face visor, i find it to be more G1 accurate....had lotsa fun doing this!!
The figure, after the modifications to the head was completed, is hand painted with enamels paints.
After the paint job is complete, a clear coat was applied over to add to the durability.
There are 2 pairs of fists, one red for punch, one blue for Counterpunch, a sword for punch, the sunsteaker gun repainted and a rifle for counterpunch.
after about 6 months, this fella is currently on ebay....please check it out..thanks!!

So you're the one that did that! I should thank you since, among other things, I used images of your custom as inspiration for my own. Well done!

Well, technically they are making one. A club exclusive figure based on the same mold with a brand new head.

Seconded. There's a very nice difference between the blocky Autobot face and the narrower, sharper Decepticon profile.

I'm waiting for the day someone creates a P/CP homage where the head actually transforms a bit more than 'helmet rocks forward ten degrees'. Or even has a straight headswap.

One possibility, retaining the rotating-mask-over-head aesthetic, might be to have the combined head carved from a cube mounted on a balljoint, with a masking piece attached roughly at the ears and going up and over the top of the head, a bit like the flip-up visors on some toys. The head would be able to rotate 360 degrees and look 90 degrees upward. To transform it, have it look the full 90 degrees straight up, so that the underside of the chin is facing forward. Then rotate the head 180 degrees so that the underside of the chin becomes the back of the new head. Rotate the masking piece from what is now the front of the head back up to the top of the head, covering the previous face and uncovering a new face.

It has the advantages that it only needs two pieces cast, allows full balljoint movement for both heads, and both the front and back of the head in both modes are unique (although the back of the head in each case may be a little flat) and can thus be different colors, or at least have different highlights, textures and shapes. Only the visor piece, travelling up over the head, remains identical, and it switches orientation from front to back so there's some visual variety in there. You could even have arrangements like making one edge of the visor jagged, matching with a corresponding jagged detail on a chinpiece, so that when opened for one face it would seem feral, but when closed for the other face there would be no evidence of the pointy surfaces. The side pieces of the visor could stand out in one mode and merge seamlessly with the side of the head in the other mode. If they were translucent, they could even simulate changing color as the different color of paint rotated under them. Make them yellow, for instance, and you could have a red-and-green scheme switch to orange-and-blue, where red and blue were the underlying paint or plastic. Or use red, and have red-and-blue switch to purple-and-white.

Ooo, you could even have polarised plastic both on the sidepiece and the side of the head, allowing a switch from a grey or darker color (blue, orange etc) to a full black.

Ahhh... to be honest, I think it's more that I tend to run off at the brain when I'm thinking about things. And that I spend way too much time thinking about plastic-capable transformation joints and sequences. I've had transformation problems (how to turn X into Y) bounce around in my head for years before figuring out a way to resolve them or make them work with fewer parts, cruder details, or greater stability.

I think I have mental blueprints for a fully transformable G1 Omega Supreme cosplay costume stashed in the back of my skull, for example. Took a while to figure that one out. Was almost as tricky as the corresponding transforming costume of G1 Devastator, especially as both of them had to be able to switch modes without revealing any part of the person wearing them. Ever tried designing six vehicles which can not only automatically assemble into a standing Devastator in an appropriately impressive sequence, but also pop out all the combiner kibble along the way AND end up being able to clomp around a stage or convention hall two seconds after assembly? The only way I could make it work in the end was to completely discard the individual Constructicon robot modes so I could pack the vehicle interiors full of forearms and chestplate pieces and an expanding head and a completely new pelvis and upper legs.

(I still haven't entirely worked out how to elegantly move it in one piece from floor to floor in a convention hotel. Devvy would be too tall and bulky for most elevators. Even in collapsed form, it'd need two or three trolleys to cart it around. Unless I could get all the vehicles to autonomously stand on end in the elevator and stack themselves two deep... hmm.)

yup, coz the mold is very flexible and suitable for alot of G1 style cars....(together with the TFU Prowl mold too!)

Just had a thought on how the hands could transform as well. Make them out of three pieces - a "palm" piece which is the back of the hand all the way out to the knuckles, a flat "fingers" panel which travels horizontally across the end of the hand between the palm piece and the thumb, and the "thumb" piece.

The palm piece is joined to the wrist by a ball or pin joint and can rotate as a unit so that the palm side is facing outwards and the back of the hand is facing inward.

The fingers piece is joined to the palm by a hinge which enables it to move 180 degrees between closed, "open" (like a karate strike), and "bent back 90 degrees" (ouch!).

The thumb piece is on a slot which allows it to slide from the top of the wrist to the bottom.

The fingers piece has a catch on it at the tip of the forefinger that allows it to snap into the thumb piece and the three pieces to form a rigid three-sided box (four with the wrist), so the robot can hold its weapon.

The top of the forefinger, the underside of the pinky finger, and the outside of the thumb are painted black. The "palm" and "fingers" pieces are otherwise painted red on one side and blue on the other. The thumb is painted red on the top side and blue on the underside.

To transform the hand, unclip the fingers from the thumb and swing them out to the "bent backwards" position. Slide the thumb down the front of the wrist to the end of the slot, so that it would normally oppose the pinky. Rotate the palm piece around its joint so that the fingers piece is once again pointing inwards. Clip the fingers piece back to the thumb.

You now have a hand which is upside-down and inside-out, and appears to have swapped from right to left (or vice versa). Where it was red on the outside before, it is now blue on the outside. You don't even have to detach it from the wrist. And using a ball joint for the palm piece means that you now have a lot more articulation for the robot hands in both modes.

OK, it means that Punch is going to have blue palms and Counterpunch red ones, but when their hands are curled into fists like the original toy it'll barely be noticeable. And it means CP can be caught red-handed, hur hur.

I've also got a way to completely change the appearance of any Transformer toy limb segment (surface molding and color, but not size) without affecting the joints, but CP's door joints here would prevent it from working on his forearms, and as it bulks up the affected limb segment a bit (unless it's first carved back), it's not really suitable for anything where a bit of padding around the limb (or whittling it down too much) would prevent transformation. It's probably best for heavy kitbash or scratchbuild projects.
