I know he was a prominent figure and leading the Cybertronians uprising against the Quintasons.
Optimus Prime also faced him along with a load of other Autbot leaders when he entered the Matrix to find an answer to the hate plague.
Is was Aplha Trion considered a Prime leader? Or just a prominent lieutenant during the early years of Cybertron.
This was all before he upgraded Orion Pax to Optimus.
was Alpha Trion considered a prime or Autobot leader?

No. He was just a greatly revered Autobot. Sentinel Prime was the leader before Optimus in most continuities. Trion wasn't a prime.

Re: was Alpha Trion considered a prime or Autobot leader?
But was he a leader?
Can an Autobot be a leader of similiar calibre like a Prime or can only Primes be leaders?- discounting the temporary leaders like Ultra Magnus which ever continuity we look at- Animated, G1 etc..
Because its strange that Alpha Trion was featured inside the matrix along with some other Autobots.
Alpha Trion is pretty old and may have been around leading before Sentinal prime.
maybe your right he was just well regarded along with those other Autobots shown inside the Matrix.
I think there is a whole back story for the franchise to explore early on the Cybertronian war and the Golden Age before this common time.

This is what pisses me off about the WFC/Exous continuaty. They make such a big fuss about it going back to the source material, but they change such a crapload of important stuff.

it doesn't change anything, it presents a different view. The Unicron Trilogy already explicitly stated the multi-verse theory, as if G1's cartoon/comic/tech-spec divide didn't already make it clear.
assembling a Neo-G1/TF:TM cast. Please PM if you have (or know of) the following at a reasonable price: Classics or Henkei Astrotrain, Sunstreaker, Sideswipe, or 3rd Party iGear Ratchet and Ironhide.

When Alpha Trion was A3, he did lead in the rebellion against the Quintessons, but that was long before the Autobot and Decepticon factions had even existed. There was no distinction between the two types of robot other than their function (consumer goods and military hardware) and their insignia marking which was assigned to which function. And during this period, he did not hold the Matrix of Leadership.
By the time that the Autobot and Decepticon factions came into existence, A3 had become Alpha Trion, who was now not a leader but a sage instead. Following the death of the U-Haul Robot Autobot leader (retroactively now known as Sentinel Prime), Alpha Trion was given care over the Matrix of Leadership, but he did not bear it nor become a leader again. He just kept it safe.
The reason he was seen in the Matrix is because of his ties to Vector Sigma, which itself is tied to the Matrix.
As for Ultra Magnus being a "temporary leader", he wasn't temporary in either G1 or Animated.
In G1, Optimus chose him to the full-time leader. However, his time as leader was cut short due to the Matrix not choosing him. He was meant by Optimus to be the new leader, but it couldn't last because the Matrix had a higher authority than Optimus.
In Animated, Ultra Magnus is the Autobot Supreme Commander, period. In this series, the rank of Magnus exceeds the rank of Prime. The Prime rank is merely that of a team captain or whatever Shockwave's head of intelligence position was as Longarm Prime. In fact, Ultra Magnus even outranked Animated Alpha Trion, who was a member of the Autobot High Council as head of civilian guilds. He (Alpha Trion) was something like a Vice-Magnus, even though Sentinel got promoted to Acting-Magnus when Ultra Magnus was injured.

I beg to differ.
If you listen to the dialog between Optimus and Magnus its clear that Optimus knows that Magnus is not the chosen one and that he's given the Matrix to Magnus only till the chosen one appears.

just a quick note_ Animated Sentinal Prime didn't get promoted to Magnus, he just announced that he was the acting Magnus and nobody on Cybertron challenged him.

also not mentioned is he is the father of the autobots he was the one who gave them there chance when he rebuilt orion pax to optimusprime. which then led the autobots to a better time and finally being merged w vector sigma and iside the matrix led optimus and the autobots thru there difficult hours.
