Excuse my ignorance but is this the new continuation of the original G1 run, a compendium of the originals or something else??

It's a compilation of the first story arc for TF: MTMTE, which is currently being published by IDW. Effectively, 1 of 2 stories being told after the Chaos storyline.

What issues does it contain? Aside from the death of Optimus.

There is a different cover on Amazon for Vol. 1. Perhaps the Amazon cover is a placeholder?

I have to say IDW , EXCELLED A+ in the new series MTME.
I'm loving it.
Not having Prime is a change. The characters are phenomenally drawn. And the narration is not just funny, it's brilliant.
This is what I want to see more of.
While RID is darker. I can't help but feel the impending Decepticon attack and the start of the war again.
But MTME, takes us into the world of TF without the war, and without Optimus.
Tailgate, Swerve, Whirl.
I have all the issues, so this release is useless for me. But For anyone who truly wants to enjoy a TF comic approved by me ( a long time TF fan) and many others I'm sure, pick this up.
Autocracy is nice, but not as good as MTME.
I'm no fan of Rodimus, but I wish MTME only had new characters we never heard of, so we push the envelope and start scratching the surface of this universe.

The cover that El Duque posted news on is cool, if a little kid friendly. Looks like it should be the cover of a Christmas annual.
