I have a question for everyone, and it may have been discussed numerous times, but I want to ask it anyway. I know that people have their preferences when it comes to PS3 vs. XBOX, and I want to get opinions on this matter before I go buying anything.

Here is the situation. I only have a Wii. Now, everyone stop laughing at me......so, anyway, I only have a Wii. I don't mind the Wii, but it is limited as far as cool games, not to mention the fact that the versions of popular games on the PS3 and the XBOX tend to have more/better content than their Wii counterparts. So I want to get one or the other. I am leaning heavily toward the PS3 (at least I can convince the lady that it can double as a blu-ray player). People also tend to believe that the PS3 is of a higher build quality than the XBOX as well.

What are your opinions? If you could only get one, which would it be and why? What kind of information do I need to know as a buyer?

I feel like a total goofball to have to ask what many of you will consider very remedial questions, but at least I can't see the pointing of fingers or hear the joking and laughing since this is the internet.

I got both the PS3 and 360 and sitting here and looking at the games I have, and the only games I have for the 360 are exclusives. So ask yourself which one has the games you want to play. Or if you want a game machine that plays movies.

I have both, and I like ths PS3 better. The only games that the 360 have that are truely awesome are Mass Effect 1 and 2. But ME2 is coming to the PS3, so HA! So the 360 only has one good game now!

But those are the only 360 exclusives I've played though...ever. So I cant really say, but I still like the PS3 better.

My recommendation is PS3, because it can also play Blu-Ray and has better exclusives like Uncharted and InFamous. I've got nothing against XBOX.

Now I do hate to take sides and say one thing is better than the other but I would advise you to get a PS3, it may cost you more than an XBox and the internet stuff is currently infirieror to that of the 360. But you do get a B ray player plus steam is coming to the PS3, which will improve the internet offering and content greately. And Valve games will now be released on the PS3 too and according to Valve the PS versions will be the best console versions.

I really have no idea how that's going to work. PS3 already has a friend's list feature, and the PlayStation Store. Steam doesn't have anything that the PS3 and 360 don't already have.

The only two Valve games that aren't on PS3 are the Left 4 Dead games. And, as a rule, all console versions of Valve games are inferior to their PC versions. (TF2 specifically)

Thanks for posting those lists, Shadowman. It is greatly appreciated, and it shows that I have nothing to worry about as far as the number of selections that exist for either system. Also, the thanks DM for the information you provided as well-that was the type of info I was looking for. I just didn't know how to ask.

I think I will likely go with the PS3, although I still have some thinking to do. I think my biggest concern at this point is that I am so casual about gaming that I almost wonder if I can justify either system. I really don't know what I will do at this time. I seem to "want" a PS3 more than the xbox, but knowing that I would likely require a better blu-ray player at some point, I would rather not pay an extra $100 just because of that feature. I really need to go through those lists of games and note carefully which ones would be important for me. Like you all have said, it really just matters what I want to play and if it is on a certain system. That one thing is going to need to drive the decision.

I'm not gonna try to sway you one way or the other... I was a big PS fanboy and absolutly hated the first Xbox. But I ended up getting a 360 because I liked the selection of games better, the internet options, while not free like PSN, are (so I've heard...) better. And most of my friends that I would play with already had 360's.

I've only had the chance to play a PS3 once or twice, and I've not looked into it's online/internet capability's so I really can't compare them. But I know that I like being able to purchase arcade games(like the old Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog, and the 80's TMNT Arcade game) from xboxlive and I like being able to watch shows on netflix on my xbox. Again I don't know for sure but I've been told that xbox is better in the DLC and game add-on's department.

I had actually bought my first game for my 360 two weeks before I even bought the system. Armored Core 4. And I remember hearing that PSN got their updates for that game weeks and sometimes months after the 360 users did. (However the game was originally a PS only title and the fanbase was much larger on PSN.)

I'm still a fan of Playstation though, I still play my PS2 on a regular basis. And I've got a friend that has been wanting to sell me his old PS3(he's getting an updated one)but I haven't had the spare money to buy it.

Ah, not Steam itself, Steamworks. Automatic updates, DLC, and community features, I'm betting Steam Cloud would be in there. Not the entirety of Steam.

On the other hand, with the exception of the Steam Cloud, PS3 already has all that. So I'm assuming this will connect to your Steam account, and post things like achievements and stats there.

Oh, of course not! PS3s no longer support PS2 games, plus despite being a dead console, you shouldn't have any trouble buying PS2 games. I still have mine and it gets all kinds of love.

Not really. If you would have asked this 6 months ago, I'd say "YES! Its the best system ever!" But alot of PS2 games are being reformatted for the PS3, so I wouldnt get one now.

I appreiate all the information from everyone. I still have to ponder what to do for a little while. I think I have made my decision, but now I want to weigh all the pros and cons and see where that leads me.

Just something in regards to PS2's I thought I'd toss in. If your buying it from a game-centered chain, like Gamestop or Gamecrazy, I'd recommend asking if you could see a used one run a dvd and cd. I'm not sure they have a policy on that, but as I've had the lasers on two ps2's burn out on me pretty quickly. I'd definitely recommend it though. I know quite a few are being ported, but that would still leave quite a few gems that are less well known, or from defunct companies.

There's no real 'right' answer. It's all personal preference really. I chose a 360 because I knew more people with them, and the library of games is more appealing. Especially on Arcade exclusives. PS3 doesn't have Ikaruga, and it won't have Radiant Silvergun. Both games fetch a huge price on the secondary market (Radiant Silvergun goes for $200 used), but cost like $10 (RS isn't out so that's just a guess).

Hell no it's not a waste of money. The PS2 is a damn fine gaming console. Also as others have said modern PS3s aren't backwards compatible. Also for about $20-$30 you can buy a mod kit with a swap disc and set it up to run imports. I did and I got four or five Japanese games because they were never released here. But if that's not your thing there are literally dozens and dozens of awesome games for PS2 and PS1 (PS2 games are all backwards compatible with PS1 discs).

If you want another gaming system that you'll fall in love with try and find a good second hand SNES or Dreamcast and some games for each. They're two of my personal favorite systems. Both should be $70 or less. You can sometimes find Dreamcasts for under $50 and I think you can snag SNESes for around that too.

I am seriously considering just getting a PS2 at this point. For what I want to do, it will actually make the most sense. I just want to play some games every so often, and the PS2 catalog is actually quite good. I still haven't made up my mind, but I am heavily thinking about the PS2 direction at this point.

I have a PS3, due to the fact when I was venturing into buying the consoles from this generation, I heard too much about 360s dying from the red ring of death. Also, I did own the original XBox, and I was never wowed by it, so I took the PS3. Personally I don't regret it, I love it.

Cheap, low learning curve, small library but with a lot of gems (SSB Brawl, Metroid Prime Trilogy) backwards compatible with ALL Gamecube games (It didn't remove that ability or limit which games are compatible) and it doesn't feel the need to blatantly rip off it's opponents.
