Help! Trying to mod Minecraft on a Mac

I'm trying to install a mod on Minecraft on my Mac. I've got OS X 10.6.8, and have the latest version of Minecraft. I'm trying to install the planes mod, found here. I tried following the instructions there, as well as some others I found, but I can't get anything to happen. I'm not even getting any of the problems other people are reporting. I'm getting absolutely no changes at all (unless I'm simply not using the mod right). Could someone who has a Mac, Minecraft, and preferably this mod help me?

Does the mod supposedly only work for OS X 10.6.8?

Isn't OS X up to 10.7.x now-a-days?

Have you tried asking the official forum? Chances are you get more help from there compared to here..
