Transformers Legends Level ?? boss farming

It has come to my attention that level ?? bosses are easy to beat and yield battle cubes. What I want to know is: Is there a way of triggering said boss appearance or is it completely random? So far my searches into this topic has revealed nothing helpful. Any enlightening input would be appreciated.
