Oddly specific I know, but I'm sure it's happened to some of you.
Example of mine:
Ever since tf armada I wanted armada Blurr. He was a badass future car that could fly and shoot missiles, and had two giant guns. He was awesome to me, and I always wanted him.
About a year and a half ago give our take, I bought a lot ogf eBay that contained the Cybertron version with the planet key and admittedly the best Blurr headsculpt I think I've seen.
Now it might be that it didn't come with guns and wasnt the badass biker helmet cowboy I remembered, but he was disappointing, I feel even with all the bells and whistles the mold itself was bad.
I still kinda want a complete armada Blurr for the sake of the fact that I never got to own him but always wanted him, but jeez what a letdown.
Anyone got any similar stories?

well i wouldn't say badly....but when i was younger some of the G1 Transformers i never got at the time were Blaster, Perceptor & the Insecticons, so just fairly recently there....i got the Platinum Edition ones! & found the shoddy cheap feeling plastic, missing cassette(Rewind) & limited articulation to be disappointing.

G1 Scorponok. I always wanted his chunky green and purple ass. When I finally got him (sans a lot of accessories) - he just came as a big ball of disappointment. The arm articulation at the elbows felt half-done and the base mode lacklustre.
I think its more a case of having too higher expectations.
G1 Devastator on the other hand - total reverse. Delightful figure.

you guys'll laugh at me, by G1 Optimus Prime.
yeah I had him as a kid yadda yadda, but lost him along the ways, so when, about 3-4 years ago I grabbed a reissue off eBay I was disappointed. I guess I was remembering something that wasn't there, as I found the articulation to be lacking compared to what my memory was telling me.

G1=Blocky crappy articulation. Anything otherwise is simply too high the expectations (Except Jetfire and the Bandai molds). As for shoddy materials, try for the re-issues in the TFC book line and some Encore.
Getting the Hb version re-issues are opening yourselves to disappointments.

Another one was transmetal 2 Megatron. Not a bad toy, but he just felt lacking, idunno.
I STILL want optimal optimus, but eh after Megatron idunno. Same with transmetal blackarachnia.

I wanted G1 Ultra Magnus so badly as a kid, but it was long out of production.
Got one when the first TRU reissues were around (edit: I'm counting 16 years old as "being an adult" here. Started college at 17 so it counts to me as "close enough".) Keep in mind, this is at a point where I did not have a deep or consuming interest in Transformers. I didn't know the cab was a white OP and the whole thing was basically an armor trailer suit for it. I just didn't know. The initial disappointment was so palpable that the first time I excitedly saw said Comm. Series Ultra Magnus on the shelf, I ended up leaving it there because of the disappointment.
It's one of my favorites now, but that initial shock ran deep.

Pretty much all of season 3 G1 figures.
Never got them as a child when they were on shelves, as my moms funds were limited, so I chose M.A.S.K. and lego toys over Transformers. Now as an adult, I find them to be horrible bricks.

Didnt take me til I was an adult. With me it started back in 1984 lol. I watched the cartoons and would see pics of them in newspaper flyers, but only select figure were in the flyers or commercials for that matter. Well id say around Thanksgiving of that year we went to Childrens Palace ( old toy store here in Cleve Oh now out of business) and man... I was let down by a good portion of the autobot cars and Megatron smh. The worst offenders was Ironhide and Ratchet lol I remember thinking "this cant be them".

After the 1986, I thought all Optimus' had a "Matrix" in the cab

Even the Seekers if compared to the G1 set or even the MP cars now, you'll end up asking yourself....I used to want these? (the G1 figs)
Hence today's collectors are a bit spoiled that the toys looks almost 90% just like their supporting show.

While I've messed around with a few odd g1 toys (the constructions and bumblebee) I've never actually owned one.
I remember liking the constructicons though. Wouldn't mind owning them and maybe the stunticons (dunno why but I have a soft spot for them )
But for the most part I grew up with beast wars.
But I know what it feels like to want a figure and recieve a brick, emergon wingsaber for example.
Except I wasnt disappointed with him.
I like old bricks.
*hugs my armada overload*

Huh. Interesting. Among my friends, the white Optimus + armor was what made the figure so cool. That was several months before the character was introduced in the movie, so we didn't know they were going to completely ignore that entire facet of the figure.

this is gonna sound odd but:
Beast Wars Polar Claw
He was on the back of the Beast Wars Megatron box (I had gotten him for christmas, probably my favourite christmas present of all time). Everything in the back looked so cool. I could imagine how Ultra Primal could transform so I wasnt that intrigued but Polar Claw realy intrigued me. His robot mode looked nothing like his beast mode, where did all those details come from, what was with that bat?
I eventually got him in a lot and while it was fun to finally get to play with him, I was quite underwlehmed. I still like that bat though, but the legs werent great and the beast mode isnt great either.
Same story with magnaboss. I got him in the same lot as Polar Claw and while I like transforming him, I was really let down as to how little integrationg the eagle component had. Even the lion. Unlike Tripedicus which is really well done, Magnabos is mostly elephant and is constantly looking up, that kind of infuriated me. I could pose him properly.
So there you go, those are my 2!

i used to have the original G1 Magnus eons ago! & your right....it is a white G1 Optimus....with one difference....in that the legs could fold up behind the cab section....which gave you this weird cube shaped thing in which you slotted into the main body(you could also do that same sort of thing with Powermaster Prime's cab section) & it's that one aspect that's lacking with CW Magnus...& quite possibly Titan Wars Powermaster Prime too.

Yeah, I think you are confused. Utra Magnus' legs didn't do that. They hung down straight along the bottom of his trailer.

Those are actually three of my favorite G1 toys.

G1 Blitzwing. I knew he was gonna be bad, but he's easily my least favorite triple-changer toy. Sandstorm is my favorite, though - dat head sculpt <3

Poor Floro Dery
Luckily for Floro Dery, he wasn't technically responsible for the 1984 cast's animation models - he just did the tidy up.

Its why the '85 bots look so much more like the toy. (ie - Red Alert vs Sideswipe)

F.Dery has "violently" protested the urban legend that John Romita Sr. was responsible for IH and Ratchet's animation revision with the heads. Hence my post concerning how the cartoon lied about the toy's actual appearance.
Floro Dery has claimed that it was HE who humanized BB, IH and Ratchet's face.

Whilst he may have had something to do with the Season1 animation models - the bulk of the work was already done and he tidied up. Adding a face to Ironhide is minimal when you compare the overall cartoon model to the toy.

I'm basing my response to Valandar's statement concerning how the cartoon lied to him.
In this case IH and Ratchet didn't look anything at all like the show..........I blame Floro Dery

Adding a face to IH and Ratchet minimal? Really? Without a head, both would look something more like Zeemon or Baron Von Joy. The windshield serving as a head or lack of head.

I was disappointed with Cybertron Scattershot. He looked cool when I saw the TV show but was only a scout class figure
