Who was 1988 Power Master Prime's true counterpart?
In Japan GodGenrai's nemesis was Overlord but he never scaled well in toy form. Hasbro did not even bother releasing Overlord figure in the US. I pose "Doubledealer" was tobe Prime's nemesis. Doubledealer was to become the decepticons new leader and may even been the 3rd incarnation of Megatron.

I doubt it, mainly because of doubledealers ability to be either bot or con, with his con side being represented by his bird mode. It's possible that they might have brought overlord over but with the declining popularity of tf at that time, and no proper season 5, I think they stopped caring about things like rivals. At least for prime. You could always take the comic approach and just have him go against scorpoknok and thunderwing

Hasbro would not have been able to bring Overlord over in a timely manner, as he was a Takara-original idea (one of the first), just to give the main good guy a traditional rival. Hasbro was not that concerned, really, the whole "main faction leader of the year" was pretty much abandoned at the time.
I will agree that Scorponok would be a good match, only to give Fortress Maximus some breathing room

Plus looking at the size of the toys, I think scorpy would rather fight powermaster prime then the gigantic fort max

I never understood the size difference between those two. Max and Scorponok were supposedly supported by The Rebirth, in which they were equally sized. So why not same sized toys, going either way? Was Fort Max that generation's 'Titan'? Was that toy the one that was supposed to be the Wow! factor? He cost around $100 in the US, IIRC, and 30 years ago that was a lot more than it is now. Didn't Hasbro think they could get away with 2 figures that size?ZeroWolf wrote:Plus looking at the size of the toys, I think scorpy would rather fight powermaster prime then the gigantic fort max
And now that we're on the subject, why was Max a double headmaster and Scorponok just single? At least in the comics it was given an explanation, but I thought it was still a bad idea. I think Scorponok was the wrong size, he should have been Max's size or PM Prime's size, maybe slightly larger, like in the comics.
Anyway, back on the actual topic. I wouldn't consider Doubledealer Ginrai's opposite, mainly due to his dual nature. It would have been good to get an Overlord, and I believe if he was smaller, perhaps the size of the TR figure, he would have made it to the US. But I think when he was designed, the designers had God Ginrai in mind, as the addition of Godbomber makes Super Ginrai almost as big as Overlord.

I always kinda thought that Piranacon was PM Optimus's counterpart, as he was the only 1988 Decepticon of comparable height to him.
And how only Super Ginrai could stand up to King Poseidon on equal ground in Masterforce (until the much bigger toys got introduced near the end of the series, that is).

Forgot about the seacons, though I would call them a threat, not a rival in the sense of what the original posters query.

King Poseidon sure had a sort of grudge every time Super or God Ginrai showed up to face him. Anyone else the king ever fought didn't suddenly make it personal for him like Ginrai's presence did.ZeroWolf wrote:Forgot about the seacons, though I would call them a threat, not a rival in the sense of what the original posters query.

A one sided rivalry then?

Well, yeah, since Ginrai being a faction leader gave him too much responsibility to focus on just one Decepticon over all of them, especially one who, while still posing a great threat, did not posing the greatest threat by the time Overlord and BlackZarak came along for him to have to contend with. But King Poseidon never did let go of his ill feelings towards Ginrai.ZeroWolf wrote:A one sided rivalry then?

Cool head-canon, but despite the toy sizes being a bit different:Darknova wrote:In Japan GodGenrai's nemesis was Overlord but he never scaled well in toy form. The box sizes tell you everything you need to know about the intent:
