I have been away from toy playing for years now. Longer still from collecting. Recently, a fellow parent dressed his kid up as a Transformer. My son had never heard of them and was curious about it.
A quick search on YouTube, and there he was looking at the cartoons of my youth. Generation 1 cartoons!! Now, he's hooked and I'm fck'd.
Considering my son is 4, I want to purchase G1 toys. I find them easy to transform. Small enough in stature, and picking up from the Bay isn't too much of a financial burden (China KO models).
Curious if someone/anyone can recommend other generation lines that are similarly sized to the G1 figures? How about a Ratchet or Ironhide in that size that doesn't look like ridiculous? Megatron?
Any and all suggestions are welcomed, and I thank the members ahead of time for their assistance. Also, my apologies if this has already been asked.

Welcome to the boards
Going the Chinese KO route would look like a good way to wet one's feet in a sense (without breaking the bank), however they are inferior in quality to the originals or even reissues. Just a small warning.
Megatron I would REALLY be careful with considering he's a firearm in his original appearance, as some countries have very strict laws concerning firearms and replicas that G1 Megatron and similar toys fall under. That's also the main reason why he's a tank most of the time nowadays. In fact I'd hold off on anything guns, especially considering a recent incident involving a toddler playing with a gun in the hallway of an apartment building.
For small and simple, have you checked out the Core Class of Generations Legacy and Studio Series (86)? True, smaller than the G1 toys, but they have the same overall simplicity. Other than that... the Legacy Deluxes like Skids seem to adhere really close to the original transformation schemes and cartoon designs, with some concessions, but they're more for the older kids.

Core class in the Legacy SS86 lines should be easy to come kind and very affordable.

For your 4yo child, I DO NOT recommend any KO from China. Those are of inferior quality, and those do not follow any safety protocols at all. Expect breakage that result in sharp shards and the presence of lead.
For a child this young, the Rescue Bots, Cyberverse, and any other "kids" lines are perfect. They usually looks great and more importantly, are easy and quick to transform.
Then at around 5 or 6, depending on your kid, you can move on to the Generations mainline and even the Studio Series.
