alternators

That depends on what you want from your toy. If you want realistic alt.modes with intricate transformations and robot modes that, for the most part, look excellent and are often faithful to their G1 counterparts, then buy them.
However, there's a lot of repaints (which is either good or bad, depending on your preference) and it does get a bit boring buying TFs that are all cars.
The other factor to consider is, are you asking if Alternators are a worthwhile purchase as opposed to Binaltechs, or are you asking if Alts and BT's are worth buying as opposed to other 'main' lines?

If you..*ahem*..."play" with your TFs, don'e expect to be having many full-scale battles with your Alts. They're mainly display pieces, but they work quite well as such. Plus, if you leave them in their alt modes, they look like classy model cars, so they display well in either form.
As for being all cars, that doesn't bother me, especially when you factor in the back story.

True, my comment on that was purely subjective. If you like ripper-looking cars that display well and are TF's, there's really not much to lose!
