Trucks, automobiles as a whole really, are an incredibly convenient disguise for a peaceful alien robot trying to blend in with human society. A train or a tank or an aircraft carrier can't just drive up to (human child ally)'s house asking for help and NOT draw all sorts of unwanted attention.

Trucks are also incredibly versatile. Pickups, concrete mixers, fire engines, and semis are all "trucks." Not really fair to say Optimus is stuck being one thing when he really hasn't.

These are all Very valid points.
But look at TF Cybertron. Optimus was scrutinized by one of his own for being a fire truck with massive cannons atop his frame.
Now look at Animated. the autobots were quite public in animated were they not? Optimus, Being a local hero and all, could have then scanned any vehicle he wanted. The Decepticons knew his vehicle mode, so switching it up, ESP after his flight upgrade, might have won him the element of surprise. There are several reasons optimus should be a truck, true. But in certain senarios, maybe another form would be better suited to him?
(Hence the story behind why prime became a lamborghini)

There are also a few examples of Prime not being a truck...so we can both be done collecting together.

I, for one, liked Prime as a fire engine. It strikes me as a very heroic, Autobot-y transformation. If trucks aren't your thing, though, how about a bus, or an armoured car?

Armoured car would be a nice idea but at least he should be voyager class and not a remold of Deluxe Class CD HotShot

OK, you know what? Look at DOTM Megatron's truck mode. If optimus would go down that line, I wouldn't have such an issue. Or, another example of an awesome truck mode? you guys remember Alternators Optimus? If someone kitbashed it into this, Id'e be ok with it:

I Like whole armored thing. It would have been better (in my mind) If the wreckers and megatron were the stunticons in the movie, but that's a whole other story.

Few years back someone did a kitbash of that into Ultra Magnus. 'twas very well done.

That looks an awful lot like HFTD Firetrap already.

I wouldn't mind a space based theme where Prime was some type of space cruiser

Saw the post and was thinking, what could Prime be other than a Semi Truck? Well, since I grew up with Transformers and very use to Prime being a Semi-truck, its very hard to picture him as anything else. Yes, a Tank would work, but i see that as Warpath or something for Grimlock, Prime as a Jet is a epic NO, Prime being a pretender nope nope, A Target master or head master, nope again! Prime as a old train does kinda work, but too me he will always be a truck no matter what. That Truck persona is dead on and shall remain in my Transformer world. But, if this was his new Truck/alt mode i wouldnt complain, not one bit...

I've been thinking of an Octopus TF as of late and to make Optimus one would be awesome! Not to mention Megs as a shark. I could possibly get behind such a wacky idea.

With Optimus aside. To just have a really well done Octoformer would have been fantastic. It has yet to be done and should be done one of these days.

EDIT: @ Stockade. That super truck you have posted there would be a perfect Optimus. Hands down.

Ok, well, then go create a thread rallying up people who arent open minded about the same type of alt mode being used 25+ times. In the mean time, we'll be here, discussing what OTHER Things optimus could be, because while a truck is cool, there are other vehicle/animal modes out there for him to have.
and btw, he was also a BAT, A LAMBORGHINI, A NISSAN, And a JET/GORILLA/TANK-BOT as well. Don't forget all of those amazing variations of optimus. They're just prime! :grin:
