G1 Toys and Cartoon Origins

Postby Briggs » Mon Nov 19, 2007 6:36 pm

Well, we know that Transformers weren't Transformers first (Diaclone, Microman etc).

The toys came first and were given Western names etc, for the cartoon.

I wanted to know if they were any characters that were cartoon characters FIRST, then toys?

What characters were created by the Western and later made toys of?

hmmm...the toys came first then the cartoon. I have a Diaclone Jazz, which on his box was labeled as Porsche 935 Turbo. The figure looks identical to the G1 but no stickers or rub-symbols. In terms of the names for the figures, the names would vary with the various countries.

Some of the figures were changed for the cartoon

Sunstreaker--red & a police car
Hoist--was red
Ironhide--was black in the Diaclone
Skids--red or black rather than blue
Sideswipe came in both red and yellow & a police car version

Some of the figures were unchanged
Prowl
Jazz
Hound
Mirage
Optimus
Ratchet
Wheeljack

eh? i thought ultra magnus was an existing diaclone or something already

I gues s some of the other bots like springer seem sort of "newish", I guess they were cartoon first, toy later?

tf that were from microman line:megatron, soundwave, ravage, laserbeak, frenzy, rumble, bumblebee, brawn, huffer, swerve, windcharger, cliffjumper, hubcap, perceptor, blaster.

from diaclone: the seeker mould, the core first year autobots, ultra magnus, blitzwing, insecticons, devastator, dinobots.

from other toylines:delux insecticons, skylynx, omega supreme, jetfire, whirl roadbuster.

not exhaustive im sure!! astrotrain and octane were possibly to be diaclone designs that missed becoming diaclones!

Wasn't Wheeljack very different with a completely different head and called Marlboor? Swoop and Astrotrain should have been released in their Diaclone colors.

Would Sunstreaker be considered as Red Alert then?

this is the police version of the Twins

In terms of Wheeljack, there were two versions of him. One had a different head. I am not sure about the other version.

You forgot Shockwave.

But to answer the OP question...There were a number of characters to never get a toy at all in G1 but has since gotten made like Arcee and Elita 1.

How many of the Hasbro-original designs used die-cast? I know Hot Rod had metal feet and Kup had metal feet and a metal torso but were there any others? Blurr? Springer?
