How long does it take for the batteries to start leaking?
I keep seeing posts about them removing the batteries as soon as they buy their toys because it will cause moisture or something.
But that made me think about it and I noticed most of my toys, I never removed their batteries... so I was wondering if its safe to keep them? I started collecting around the end of Energon line.

If your TF comes with cheap China brand batteries, better check them out after 6 months.
Better yet, just take them out now.

I rarely keep batteries in figures, just cause they often just sit on display most the time anyway.

I learned this lesson the hard way. Last week it finally occurred to me to take the batteries out of my G2 tank Megatron. Yeah, they'd been in there since he was bought. The battery compartment itself, after a good wipedown was fine, but the batteries...wow. They were a nasty mess, all soft and mushy, covered in corrosion, it was very uncool.
So. Yeah. Remove the batteries on display pieces, or at least check them every couple months.

I don't think small watch batteries are a big issue; at least I have never seen them corrode. Can anyone else confirm?

Hmm.. i've never really tested that yet. What toys have watch batteries?
Mine are the regular AA batteries. (Or is it AAA?)
Found in Movie Leader toys. This type is prone to leaking.

MP Prime & MP Megatron. Not sure if others. I have never seen old watches with corroding batteries. Perhaps there is not enough acid in them to eat all the metal.

I guess the watch batteries will be safer.
Maybe you should still check it from time to time. Say, 6 months, 1 year, or so.
Then let us know your findings.

Re: How long does it take for the batteries to start leaking?
I never leave AAs or AAAs in my TFs. If I buy a new Ultra that uses them, I'll put them in just to hear the sounds once, and then take them right out.
But the ones that come with the little watch-type batteries already installed: I don't worry about those. I don't think they have the same leakage potential, since they're designed for long-term usage.

Re: How long does it take for the batteries to start leaking?
I don't really know which one use AA or AAA batteries. I know I removed Dark Scorponok's batteries because his sound annoyed me every time I transform him.
I never use the sound or at least very rarely. The only one I use is Animated Megatron's.
Those are the only one I have in my head that make sounds/lights are:
===================
I am not sure if RID Leader Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus has electronic sounds on them.
Armada Supreme Unicron.
Energon Ultra Landmine.
Energon Supreme Unicron.
Energon Supreme Takara Omega Supreme.
Cybertron Voyager Vector Prime, Galaxy Force Vector Prime.
Cybertron Ultra Cryo Scourge, Cybertron Defense Red Alert, Sky Shadow, Menasor, Wing Saber.
Cybertron Leader Optimus Prime, Galaxy Force Optimus Prime, Metroplex, Galvatron (not sure if he has sound but I plan on getting rid of him anyway).
Cybertron Supreme Starscream.
Movie Leader Brawl, Nightwatch OP, Premium OP.
Animated Leader Megatron.
===================
So I don't need to remove the ''Watch type'' batteries? Those little circle batteries. Only the AA and AAA?

My original Galvatron still works after all of these years as does my Shockwave. The Omega Supreme toy I bought 12 or so years ago still operates with the batteries in them as does the Trypticon I bought 6 years ago. Never had a problem with the batteries in my figures. I've always left them because I'm amazed at how long they last. And last. And ... oh look ... there goes the Energizer Bunnitron!

All of my TF's are currently in storage, and I went through awhile back and took all of the batteries out and put them in a seperate container. If they are not out to be displayed, or are never played with, why take the chance?!

Well, I guess the easies way to answer that without having to wait for months is to think about whether or not you've ever had a digital watch that showed signs of battery leakage. No labratory necessesary.

Re: How long does it take for the batteries to start leaking?
My old watch was already thrashed some years ago. Didn't check the battery. Since then, my watches are all solar now.
From your experiences, i guess the answer is no?
(no leakage)
Speaking of which.. maybe Hasbro can do solar powered toys too.
I've seen a few Japanese toys powered purely by the sun or ordinary room lighting.

Re: How long does it take for the batteries to start leaking?
Just opened up a digital watch I bought about 18 months ago. Battery was dead, and on opening the watch I found it had a coating of white powder. Yikes.

For anyone who hasn't seen Spotlight: Sledge (and why not?!), my gritty and dark fanfiction piece "Holiday" is posted here.
