Wax on, wax off: A Question About Using Car Wax on TF's

Weapon: Null-Ray Rifle
As I near completion on my current Gundam Exia build, I've begun planning the first steps of my DMK OP and BB build.

Now the skinflint in me is wondering if I can save some cash on gloss spray [and potentially avoid compatibility problems] by using car wax or Tamiya model wax on OP and Bee's armor/car-kibble parts. I've been unable to find FFP in my neck of the woods, and the only option open to me was gloss spray from either Tamiya or Pylox and Krylon. And then I read about scale car modelers using commercial car wax on their model kits.

I'm a bit apprehensive because these modelers are applying the wax onto painted surfaces, whereas I'm planning on applying the wax straight onto unpainted plastic. I've heard that certain brands of car wax and be abrasive and harm the plastic surface.

Has anyone successfully used car wax on their TF? And if Tamiya modeling wax any good?

Another question: does car wax on model kits/figures need occasional re-applying like real cars, or does that single application last as long as the fig itself?

Or do you think I should just stick to gloss spray like everyone else?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
