In Transformers: Devastation, Optimus Prime mixes speed with power. And that Energon Axe makes all the Decepticons nervous.

This could be an excellent pun.

I don't think a game has to be unique:
A) If it's just smoothly assembled, social, and cheap.
B) If it targets people who don't play that many games.
MMOs bank a lot on the social aspect and targeting people who don't play games much.
In my mind the success fo this game banks on three things:
- Does it effectively reach people who don't play a lot of games?
- Does it have multiplayer support?
- Is it smooth and relatively bug free?
My gut feeling is that they could seriously amplify the success of this if they lowered the price and had DLC. I expect fun mods will be developed for this game if they don't have major DLC plans.
I've already been looking into mod tools for this. G2 should be a no-brainer for DLC at least since four of the five characters can "become" G2 with a recolor and new faction symbol. Replace Wheeljack with Carzap. Throw in Rapido as a Prowl recolor.
Maybe a DLC G1 pack that swaps Cliffjumper for Bumblebee, Sunstreaker for Sideswipe, Ironhide for Grimlock, etc.
Or a 2k5 pack that replaces the Autobots with movie Autobots. Rodimus replaces Sideswipe, Arcee replaces Bumblebee, Springer or Kup replaces Grimlock, Ultra Magnus replaces Prime.

No they really don't. The better MMOs out there use a subscription model, pay-to-play, and the casual gamer isn't really down with that.

It doesn't have multiplayer. But then again, I don't know why you'd ever consider multiplayer a requirement for success.

Lowering the price doesn't really accomplish as much as you'd think. And DLC is already a very controversial subject for many, many gamers. Most people prefer not having to pay extra for things.

Assuming they release the SDK for it, which not all developers do. You ever notice there's no proper mods for Borderlands?

So far, there seem to be mods for all of Platinum Games because while they deny that they use the same proprietary engine for all of their games, they seem to use the same tools. I don't know if physics mods will be very doable but I'd be surprised if re-skins pose an issue.
It isn't a matter of having the full SDK to decompile and crank out a few skins. I've done MMO mods and those aren't based on the SDK.

I'm pretty sure I read that the game's going to be $40. Also, DLC characters and missions would be nice. As well as retail "exclusive" DLC's.

RodimusRex wrote:I'd maintain Call of Duty and World of Warcraft have two different demographics but almost no MMOs charge a subscription fee anymore.
First off, Call of Duty? Not an MMO. Second, Final Fantasy XIV? Actually an MMO, and the devs have said that no, they're staying pay-to-play until they have to shut the game down--it will never be free-to-play. And it's worth it.

That's impossible, MMOs don't allow people to mod them. Which ones are you talking about?

I was doing texture and model swaps in WoW long before they added transmogrification. There are varying levels to the exploit communities for these games. Most people serious about machinima are at least a couple of layers in, extracting models and sometimes tweaking the clientside 3D models and textures. You do need to bypass the warden software. There are generally several phases of anti-hacking/cheating software in an MMO. The first is file verification.
Changing music and textures is fairly easy, usually.
Also, I looked it up after my last post and found the texture swapping tools people use for Platinum's Korra game, which looks very similar. It should work for Transformers because it intercepts and replaces textures in memory on their way to being rendered. Shouldn't need to decompile the game. The biggest risk is that character parts and objects will share textures, ie. maybe with Optimus Prime using so much solid red that he won't have a unique texture for each part of his arm. He probably will though for ease of tinting/recoloring characters in the game on the development side.
And... just dug deeper into Korra modding because of the game engine similarity. Looks like there might be some mild texture sharing but a G2 repaint mod will probably be doable if the art is handled like Korra's.

For comparison, here's the Optimus Prime character model pages as seen in the first Ark book:

Compared to the cartoon model, the game model looks puffier in robot mode, the game head is rounder (being more like the cartoon's alternate head instead of its primary head seen above), while the truck mode looks like they just copied-and-pasted the truck mode from the Ark book into these new images.

Also, why did Bumblebee suddenly go Super Saiyan for a sec in that trailer?

Bumblebee's your 'bot for lightning-fast beatdowns. Here’s a clip that shows off his fancy footwork in Transformers: Devastation.
