Early Concepts for Transformers Titans Return Overlord by Emiliano Santalucia

Posted by Va'al Apr 5, 2018 at 5:43am CDT 19,145 views
Today brings us another round of concept art from Italian toy designer Emiliano Santalucia on his official Facebook page. This time, we have a look at the early stages of toy concepts for the Transformers Titans Return Leader class Overlord figure, including the two vehicle modes (jet and tank), the two Titan Master pilots (that were then lost in the execution somewhat), and the robot mode together. Check it out below, and let us know what you think in the Energon Pub!

Titans Return Overlord early design.
This design was executed early on, and went through a lot of changes for various reasons. But I loved working on it with the team!

We don't see the small figures Mega and Giga in the IDW version of Overlord, do we? There are still a few months of comics, though.

It’s pretty safe to assume Overlords story ended in Dying of the Light. He let go off Megatron. Overlord was never a central story character, more like a side character and since the final stories will be completing the quest to Cybertopia it’s safe to assume won’t be coming back.

I wouldn’t put any money on Giga and mega popping up. The only Masters ever show up in IDW was Zarak 12 years ago for one page and die.

I think you're wrong about that. With so many pieces taken off the board Overlord is one of the few danglers that is left.

Also, we had Hunter O'Nion, Abraham Dante, a whole bunch of unnamed Machination guys, Thinkbox, some unknown beastheadmasters from 10 million years ago, Infinitus and Sovereign as Headmasters.

This is one of the only times where i preffer the final released version. Far more steamlined for the lean mean killing machine.

Looks closer to what we got from the Takara Legends line.

More concept art that looks far better than cruddy blocky final product. Bleh.
Actually only time I seen Overlord look even remotely cool

I was referring to the original masters. Only Zarak. It’s not like IDW has tossed meal anyone else in from the old fiction.

I wouldn’t say Overlord is a hanging thread at all. There’s not mystery to him. We know how he came back, why he was on th necroworld and what his purpose was. By the end he didn’t care anymore to kill Megatron and Megatron is gone.

There’s plenty of threads dangling more important than seeing overlord die. We got Pharma, the cog faction, the lost light, scorponok, the Grand Architect and his machinations. All this is converging to the final story with Cyberutopia. Overlord has nothing to do with any of it.

So you must hate every G1 toy for not looking like how they looked in the cartoon then huh?

Hate to be in the same room with you and an 1984 Ironhide or Megatron

Not sure how you got a "G1 toys vs. cartoon" design dichotomy from his post, but okay.

That is a cool design. Shame the toy lost the 2nd titan master and the beef, but it still came out good

Because it’s just an Overlord Design with no info given for what his gimmick was. We’ve seen this before with Galvatron and others by Emiliano Santalucia. He’s not told they’re gonna be headmasters/Titan masters just do an updated design of this character and they’ll take ques from it

Yeah, the best was his interpretation of Optimal Optimus. Hasbro just asked him for a design and didnt tell him about the gimmick. So he did the obvious and had both primals turn into gorillas. Hasbro showed these designs when it was first revealed and confuse the fandom to no end.

That’s why I don’t get upset when we see these. Like the idea that Galvatron was not intended to be a titan masters and the “art proves it” no. He’s just given a name and told “we’re going to make a toy” that’s all he’s given. He’s not part of the engineering or prototype design phase. He’s a freelance artist that has a good relationship with hasbro. They take his work and apparently very lightly use the appearance cues.

I mean look at the art overlord. He’s just a highly detailed stylized version of the cartoon and original toy. He’s even got the base accessories.

I found a Chaos on Velocitron set on clearance at may local Walmart for about $65 considering exchange rates. How good a price is that?

Is the set worth it? The only mold I own from the set is the Blurr Mold as Blurr.

I really do want the die cast Rodimus Titanmaster. But not sure the rest of the set is worth that price.

I hope you bought it because it retailed for $99 and goes for much more than that. Nautica alone was selling for close to $50+ at one point. But Walmart?! This was a TRU exclusive, no?

Taking out what you could get for the set in the open market, I wasn't a fan of the set. The only figure I liked was the clone.

Quickswitch is on my opinion better than Sixshot, I love this grays Optimus but I'm not a good judge as I love this mold on all its repaints, and Nautica is awesome, way better than Hasbro's version of Blurr.

On my opinion, the set totally worth it, wathever price it is, but it's only me.
