The article goes in depth about the process on how ILM worked with Michael Bay's team to produce the animation on the Transformers movie. The work that went into creating making the Transformers photo realistic. And what it was like to work with Michael Bay.
"To do the transform, what we did was have the robot model scrunched up inside the car model. Then as the transformation begins, the panels of the car move out of the way to reveal the robot parts and so on".
"How is it to work with Michael Bay? Well, Mike is a jerk! But he’s a very talented jerk — he’s usually right in his choices. You have to understand Mike is a very energetic person, and if he doesn't like something, he'll say, 'That is the most terrible thing I've ever seen! I hate that!'".

So they're finally confessing the robot and car can't actually turn into each other? At first I thought they just mass-shifted a tiny bit between modes, but the parts aren't actually formed from cgi car parts
