New Images and Details for upcoming Amalgamous Prime figure from Age of the Primes

Transformers fans got a treat this week when Hasbro lead product designer Mark Maher shared a big batch of photos and insights on Amalgamous Prime through his Instagram page markclonus. The post not only showcased the figure from multiple angles but also pulled back the curtain on the inspirations that guided its creation.

Amalgamous Prime comes to the Age of the Primes line with a design that leans into his shapeshifting legacy. Takara Tomy's Yuki-san brought new engineering twists that give the toy more flexibility than past Primes, while Ken Christiansen's Covenant of Primus artwork influenced the use of the T-Cog as a defining feature of the character. The result is a Prime loaded with unique connections and clever details that underline his ever-changing nature.

As designer Mark Maher explained, "Unique connections along with strong versatility clearly makes this character a must have." He also encouraged fans to imagine the Prime's limitless possibilities: "Such a fun challenge to sit there and imagine him constantly changing and shifting into things as he talks to his brothers and sister."

I can't wait to see how creative/wild people get with 2-3 (or more) Amalgamous Primes. Imagine getting enough copies to build an Amalgamous Titan.

For starter, I can't believe the thing is a voyager. There's no scaling in the pictures on the net, but he must be at the very least the same size as that Legacy Junkion garbage truck. Those two together may wield interesting results. :-?

At the moment, that's just making me imagine never being able to find this guy in on any shelf.

Titan would be pushing it, but the vehicles in these pics are making me consider him the patron Prime of Diaclone-heritage, which could justify getting 3 or 4 to make a total of 14 components...

And I like how the kinda' flattened Shockwave head and slightly Straxus-esque pickaxe give him Marvel prehistory vibes as well.

But more than anything, this thread keeps making a ditty replay in my head, pondering if she was also an inspiration:

Though probably not, since I'm probably the only person who actually liked that movie.

Mark Mahar's Instagram page posted a shot of Brawl's combiner leg mode:

Image

It will be interesting to see how this attaches to the Onslaught skeleton, since Bruticus appears to be a hybrid of the Menasor/Superion system for the upper torso and the SS86 Devastator system for the lower torso and legs, with voyager-class figures that have ratchets for the combiner mode ankle tilt.

I will also say those complaining about the skeleton/frame system are frankly nuts if you think the Combiner Wars system was better. You can actually pose these combiners which are far sturdier and present a much better silhouette. And no, I don't care about 3rd-party options, which are a completely different animal cost-wise, don't support the official brand, and not to mention tend to be EXTREMELY fiddly. I am talking solely about mainline official releases.

I like to mix and match my combiners.

I like the Menasor we got recently, but for Superion the legs are ruined with this style. Combiner Wars may not be as posable, but it's a hell of a lot better at showing off the individual bots as parts of the whole.

So far, Menasor and Devastator are wins, and Superion is a fail/break even at best. Can't wait to see what Bruticus looks like.

Spoken like someone who's only handled Menasor. Menasor sucked, because the CW Optimus Prime mold was clearly designed as Optimus Prime first and a combiner torso second.

But the only weakness of the Combiner Wars/PotP system was the lack of ratcheting hips in the limb robots, and even that wasn't really too bad in most cases. Most CW/PotP combiners are perfectly poseable, thanks, and do have good silhouettes. And anything without the Optimus mold as a torso is plenty sturdy.

Volcanicus and Abominus weren't the problem children when setting up this photo.

The skeleton/frame system brings ratcheted elbows, but at the cost of the modernized Scramble City functionality - characters are now locked into being either an arm or a leg, and unless skeleton connectors are shared they can't swap between combiners either. It only even exists because Hasbro were going off Menasor being badly drawn 90% of the time in the cartoon, to the point where the Stunticons were clipped on like Armada Mini-Cons to generic blocky limbs
It's a tolerable tradeoff in Menasor's case because of just how HOPELESS the Combiner Wars Optimus mold was as a torso, but disappointing to see it foisted on the guys whose limb members were actually drawn as the limbs and whose CW versions functioned fine. It hurts Superion's look.
Frankly, the main appealing thing about the AotP Aerialbots IMO is that the limb robots no longer suffer from severe IDW1-itis.

Interesting that the Combaticon limbs are being designed to be less dependent on the skeleton and not have it painfully visible. Maybe they'll even actually be able to swap between being arms and legs. They better be, considering. They also better not try too hard to avoid representing the combiner kibble feet.

I'm frustrated that we haven't seen anything of the Armada Jetfire that was mentioned in the leaked listings from a while back (from before "Age of the Primes" dropped as a name). Or any more of that Brave Maximus we've had a tease of.

I'm guessing the Cerebros that came with Omega Prime? I'd love to have a full Brave Max in Selects, but after they reissued Fort Max I lost hope in that happening.

While I don't remember us getting any legitimate leaks of Armada Jetfire from quite that long ago, as far as we currently know he's slated as one of next year's Commander Class releases.

Takara Tomy has started a new batch of Transformers pre-orders in Japan today for upcoming Age of the Primes and Studio Series figures as well as MPG Soundwave. Aside from Soundwave and Airachnid these are all figures that Hasbro has announced but still hasn't taken pre-orders on so they're getting the jump on the rest of us this time. Hopefully Hasbro will catch up in the coming weeks.

Here's up for order:

Movie ST-14 Deluxe Airachnid
Movie ST-15 Deluxe Windcharger
AOTP-23 Deluxe Quintus Prime
AOTP-24 Deluxe Blast Off
AOTP-25 Deluxe Sureshot
AOTP-26 Deluxe Quickstrike
AOTP-27 Deluxe Jalopy
AOTP-28 Deluxe Cybertron Sideways (no pictures below, he's already released by Hasbro)
MPG-19 Soundwave & Laserbeak

We are in fall convention season so we should be seeing Hasbro putting these on display soon and hopefully follow up with pre-orders. Let us know in the Energon Pub forums what you're looking forward to.

Damn, that Blastoff is nice. Guess I have to break down now and get Vortex. Amazon cancelled my initial pre-order and I never bothered to get him later, but damn that Blastoff is looking amazing and he will need his friends. Always a big fan of the Combaticons.

No interest in plant squid there, though it does look o.k, and definitely not interested in Jalopy.

Soundwave is looking good, but he'll be super expensive to import. Still attached to my kidneys and liver sooo, yeah not really getting MPG Soundwave.

I'll probably be pre-ordering Windcharger when he's available.

Targetmaster Sureshot and Arachnid look nice, but I'll likely wait and see if they go on sale at some point. Don't have any pressing need and with the higher pricing now, yea I can wait.

Man, Pulse Nemesis Prime is up for order, if you have a premium membership. The rest of us have to wait a MONTH to order, November 3. And they're charging full Commander price at $90! I really just want the Mini-cons, but not for that price.

Yeah, something happened with the price. Isn't it available overseas, like Amazon Japan? Might be worth looking into to save a buck or two. Also, I'm hearing that there's a possibility that one of the Minicons is defective.

Star Convoy is the ultimate form of Optimus Prime, with his full power of the 13th Prime returned. But what was his form at his origins? Meaning before he has chosen to lock up his powers and devolve into Orion Pax? :-?

I supposed he would have looked like his SS Gamer self?
