As for Fire Emblem Heroes, it's FREE. Sure, there's way to be more powerful quicker by paying, but there's plenty of gameplay. FUN gameplay.
You do need a Nintendo account though. But if you already own a 3DS, Wii-U or Switch, you may already have one. You'll just have to link it to your mobile.

I did tried a few other mobile games, but most all boil down to wait-n-pay. I flushed all of them. Only Fire Emblem remained.
Also, A Girl Adrift. Because kawai anime girls chain fishing is mind-numbly fun.

I just started playing A Girl Adrift in the last week, super cute game.

Fun thing about Fire Emblem Heroes, there is easy access to earn their premium in-game currency (orbs), in-game, and is easily do-able without endless grinding. Plus you can upgrade units to the next rarity level (one stat to two star, etc)-something Earth Wars *won't* do.

My upgrades cost so much that I'm glad I'm only starting them every few days.

Wait, you just got the 6th shuttle slot, but you also maxed out a 3* bot? And you're complaining about upgrade times? Something doesn't add up here.

You only get the 6th shuttle slot at HQ8, upgrades are less than 24 hours at that point, and 3* bots don't max until level 50, which you can't get to until the HQ12 upgrade. So I think you are mistaken about your Soundwave and blissfully ignorant about how long upgrades are going to be. To put it inperspective, I'm dealing with 14 day upgrades right now and my highest bots are level 48.

14 days?! By Primus!! Sheesh. Guess my Soundwave can upgrade again then at some point! Whoa! Thanks for the intel. ^^

You can upgrade your research lab at the following levels:
Lv 1 (10-11): HQ4
Lv 2 (20-21): HQ7
Lv 3 (30-31): HQ10
Lv 4 (40-41): HQ12
Lv 5 (50-51): HQ15

• We’ve had reports regarding bots who are assigned to an outpost that would follow aerial bots after they use a tank rush Special Ability on them such as Fire Rush and so on.
  Thanks for all your reports, we’ve now been able to fix this. You should notice this no longer happens. Any strange behaviour, please let us know.

• Lot’s of reports regarding replays not being viewable.
  This issue is actually down to Android and IOS versions of the game being released at slightly different times. Once both platforms are at the same version you will notice replays will work as intended again.

• There have been reports that Combiners could be causing people to crash or get disconnected during a battle.
  We’re actively investigating this, and if anyone has a similar issue we would like to hear from you. If you have any steps which could help us reproduce this behaviour that would be very helpful.

These are just a few examples of the reports that we've received from you, and we continue to work hard to improve your experience with the game every day.
