Here is all we know from John Warden regarding this new Generations line.
War for Cybertron line may include some previous molds, but intention is to give good representation of the characters.
...
A lot of families in fan community, it’s exciting to bring them to the brand and share with kids, nieces, nephews. That doesn’t detract from Generations, War for Cybertron appealing more to the older fans and collectors.
...
Power of the Primes ends in 2018. War for Cybertron starting in January 2019, no reveal of the new fiction yet so plenty of speculation welcome.
...
Trilogy invites to speculate, not lead to an ecosystem – it’s a storytelling universe, as per Hasbro blueprint.
...
Next chapter will be approached with fan feedback in mind – though cannot reveal yet. War for Cybertron is a new take on things, moving a little further away from the callbacks and throwbacks in POTP too, though story can feel a little more familiar.
So, any previous rumour of "evergreen" designs taking over generations, or Cyberverse, have been 100% debunked. It will be business as usual with the Generations line right down to the use of tooling and designs from previous lines. These will still be toys aimed at older kids and collectors and be centered around G1 characters. The fact that it may sound limited to non earth based alt modes does not really detract from anything when we currently have very few strictly earth based vehicles in this year's Generations line. As a further example that any character is still up for grabs, the main cast of More tha Meets the Eye had non earth designs, so the setting of this new chapter does not hinder to who we could get.

John Warden had also said that combiner and headmaster toy technology could resurface (as we saw with Power of the Primes) so any G1 character you did not get yet has a chance of coming, including combiners you did not get yet. At this point, everything is back on the table with three more lines to fill with toys.
It also seems like the speculation of the contents of this new trilogy may have an effect on what we end up getting down the road, so ss John Warden has invited this fanbase to do, speculate away!

Which is somewhat a bit sad. During a previous interview Warden said the line need renewal and to be refreshed, I really had big hopes for new characters, a bit like we got during Unicron Trilogy, or even like the RiD ones, but with more generation-like engeenering than the over simplified toys kids currently have.
And you say it'll be 84 all over again.. I'm already tired.

Chatting to Emiliano Santalucia, it looks like this may very well be the case.
All design parts fit, including the leg cannons, hip panels and shoulder pads:

He obviously did not and cannot confirm what is what and to which line it belongs. But, if anything, he confirmed that it is indeed one of his sketches.

The well of creativity on hasbro's current design team is about an inch deep, they already scraped the bottom and have come back up

Well of creativity from Hasbro ? or acceptance factor from the average Tfan ?
When I see debates about Potp prime fists being gray instead of blue.. I somewhat understand why hasbro continues to play secure.
I regret Rid2000/unicron Trilogy, period where Tfans where enthusiast to see indirect hommage to old characters through deco etc.
We were able to read things "Cybertron Hotshot is a nice hommage to Hotrod", "Snarl's chest is a cool hommage to BM silverboilt" etc.
Now that Hasbro gave fans what they want, we read "Hotrod is crappy it's 2 shade of red different than the episode 214, Dinobots are too small, Primal should have orange cockpit" etc...
Who said "the worst punishment is to give men what they desire the most" ? because it's how I feel the generation line currently. Hasbro gives fandom exactly what they wanted for years, and fans are not happy. and less and less happy in fact.

No, I get ya, I absolutely agree, and seeing the aftermath of this con, have felt a large amount of salt in the potp and predaking thread, seems the only good take away this year was the studio line, and what a line that is shaping up to be. Cybertron was probably my favorite time to be a fan, everything was right in the tf world back then, even thrilling 30 was great due to the diversity of the figures released, then warden took over...

I'm not sure to agree. I've not been a fan of T30 and previous generation lines, at least on engeenering level. We got very poor engineering back in this time (do you want to discuss T30 bumblebee, Whirl, blitzwing...) wqith robot and vehicule mode not holding together, fiddly panels which never align and lock in place etc.
I saw lot of improvments with Warden. Tfs are fun to transform again. Just need to unfocus from 84'.
For me the greatness stopped somewhere during universe, approx during the FoC thing, and came back with a bit CW and TR.
Potp is a mixed bag, some great toys and some "why again?" (Starscrean, Inferno..), "why this cartoon slavery ?" (Orion, Windcharger..).

Yeah, even a simple variation like "War of Cybertron" would have been preferable. This is "Robots in Disguise" all over again.
I'm fine with them going back to an '84 lineup just as long as it's Cybertronian forms and not another set of cars. Finish out the Headmasters and Autobot Targetmasters while we're at it.

Guys, I said G1, not 84. In fact, I dont think it will be 84, simply because we already have many o those guys and the later G1 toys work much more with the cybertron aesthetic.
There is loads of opportnuity for fresh takes with this line, the only thing making it G1 is the story backdrop which deals with the war (which is a time where we had G1 characters).
Sabrblade wrote:Still wish Hasbro had thought up a different, all new name for this line.
Well, we dont know what the line will be called, just the trilogy. Its not like the name of the previous trilogy was linked to a specific toyline. We dont call Titans Return Astrotrain as Prime Wars Astrotrain, so at least it shouldnt be too bad.

There are just certain characters you must have to keep the toys selling. I always thought some of those certain characters are the Dinobots, so that we might be able to get some voyager sized versions somewhere down the line. Now that we have a version in generations, there isn't a rush to get them all out at a certain time.
As for other characters I guarantee we will be seeing eventually, look at the fan vote. Finishing off the Decepticon double Targetmasters is definitely in this 3 year plan. Spinister and Needlenose are part of the fan vote. Then you've got Impactor, Mirage, Wheeljack, and Tracks.
Warden and team definitely want to give us good generations representations of all the G1-ish characters.
So we need to start thinking a little differently. We need to think, how is the creative team going to use the easy selling figures to retool, partial tool, and re-engineer into the more obscure characters that we are clamoring for. Especially since the are more than likely going with Cybertronian style alt-modes.
Let's see for starters (with the above known entities):
Mirage - I could see a Cybertronian Mirage equating to Sureshot. F1 style Race Car to a Buggy that looks almost exactly like an F1 race care, yeah that can easily happen.
Wheeljack - Cybertronian Wheeljack was a boxy transport thing, with some creative liberties, I can so him turning into Crosshairs (also a boxy transport thing).
Tracks - You can see where I am going with this. Sports car, guess what Pointblank is... a Cybertronian Sports car.
Remember, this is only speculation, but for those of us wanting these characters to be realized in G1, it's a tough sell to Upper Management I am sure to say "hey we've got these great ideas for the 1987-1989 characters". It's a higher risk to sell "new" characters, especially when the primary characters, who we know and love/hate, are what sells.
So, I think we should start a list of possible characters (the ones who have yet to have the Generations treatment since T30) who could be potential figures for this new trilogy, and how. Obviously they aren't all going to come to fruition, but it will be neat to discuss.
Oh, and what in the heck will the Master class become?
The other half of that, is that, now, we need to discuss if Generations sublines will now be a yearly subline instead of 18 months. If so that changes things, as it would dictate how many characters we can get in each class.
18 month toylines vs 1 year toylines:
Master Class - 15 vs 9-12 (depending on how the remaining Prime Masters get released)
Legends - 12-16 vs 9ish
Deluxe - 20-24 vs 13
Voyager - 9 vs 5
Leader - 6 vs 4

John Warden did say once that they want to have a big Optimus per line. Not sure if it was his decision or a mandate from Hasbro (or both). So I definitely expect to keep seeing at least Optimus for each part of this new trilogy.
Also, if you rad the quotes in the first post, John Warden says that the upcoming lines wont necessarily have an ecosystem. So there probably wont be a maser class.
mordhelm wrote:Another thing to consider, John Warden did say he wants us to speculate on what's to come. The design team probably wants to know what characters fandom really wants to see. So maybe if we continue "speculating" about certain characters (Seacons, Monstructor, Apeface, Snapdragon, etc) they will come to pass.
Yup, this seems to be an open letter to us fans.

Minicons and Micromasters could be collapsed together as one concept and sold at the $5 price point. A lot of larger characters could be double homages; for example, I could imagine the Starscream looking like a hybrid between the G1 tetra-jet, War for Cybertron seeker, and his form in Cybertron/Galaxy Force. Jetfire might treads a line between his Energon form and some iteration from War Within. Scorponok could end up being our Titan Class figure a couple years down the line, with a design that blurrs his G1 and Energon aesthetics. Omega Supreme would be another good choice, blending his WFC video game design and his Energon form. And of course, Tidal Wave would be a pretty epic Titan Class figure.
And then when you consider the practice of creating pre-tools (e.g., TR Sentinel Prime and Astrotrain) there's a lot of other potential, too. Each design may have a G1 and a Unicron Trilogy character planned for it. There might even be some Beast Machines stuff in there too. I mean, all of the Vehicons had Cybertronian alternate modes, and even though I imagine we won't see anything 'furry', I doubt we'll go that long without some beast modes. There are G1 characters like Catilla that could be pretooled as Transmetal Beast Wars characters, which would look just as Cybertronian as Ravage ever has. Heck, one mold gets you Catilla, Cheetor/Tigatron/Ravage, and even one of Armada Unicron's horsemen.

The original classics figures were awesome for their time. They came out here whilst UT was still around. I loved UT, with the exception of being frustrated at Armada's lack of articulation. I loved Beast wars before that. Beast wars continued G1 in a fresh new way. RiD 2000 was a cool interlude, But UT was a new start. The basic beats of Optimus and Starscream's designs were there, but it was more new than old, and kept growing and evolving. It was new enough that then Classics was a welcome return for people like me to get actual modern G1 versions of my fave characters. But things slipped very quickly. Universe toys stopped being fun, and too much emphasis on 'Modern takes' just made things feel a mess. Prime wars, whilst re-treading old ground in places, and also, to me, offering CW 84 bots that were worse than their Universe/rts figs was irksome (but hey it saved me money)-has given me what I wanted. Simply, with no mess. Fun, modern, good sized figures of old G1 characters, even introducing many characters that haven't seen action since the 80's and 90's! They are also fun toys, collectible from retail (ish)and have a connective play pattern. Yeah MP is also G1, but I don't want an overblown collection of giant expensive figures of every character in G1 ever!. I like the MP line taking on the heavy hitters, and I own nearly all of them, but I wanted and waited for what Prime wars has done. Now it is done, lets move forward. Generations is the place for G1 homages and updates, no need to stop, but I'd be less tired of this saturation if the movies and other media made new stuff. Cyberverse looks completely unnecessary. Kids and fans alike deserve new stuff. I want new stuff

As for Generations, I'd like to see more late G1 and G2 stuff, and some Japanese stuff. Road Ceaser, Turbo masters, play with concepts like the micromasters, and combiners like Raiden. Battlestars, Zone, so much that hasn't been explored in modern ways. And yes, start combining that with UT stuff. Get a team lead by Thunderclash featuring Hot Shot, Energon Roadblock, Dreadlock from Galaxy Force (sorry, I hate all the forced 'G1' names on UT characters...) But you get my idea. Sod it, throw IDW original bots in as well. Stock the shelves with the DJD!
As for speculation on War for cybertron...I think maybe they are starting a new continuity, set in pre-earth days. Yes this will include Op, Megs etc...but maybe it will diversify the teams and characters with pre-earth forms of characters not usually seen in that period. Again, a cybertronian Thunderclash, Apeface as Megatron's main general...Beast wars Quickstrike as a bounty hunter flipping between factionslike doubledealer with 2 robo beast modes...I'd like to think that is what Warden means. G1 isn't the only continuity to start at pre-earth. Armada did, Aligned did. Lets start mixing in some of that goodness.

See, I read that to mean "the toys won't have specific interactions across the entire line." So while we are likely getting Headmasters and Combiners, even Evolution toys, it won't be "WFC part 1 is all Headmasters" but rather, hey at the "Master" price point we can offer this variety of characters, at the "Legends" one this, at the Deluxe these, etc.
That said, if it means more Legends and Deluxes, I am fine with the Master class disappearing at least temporarily.
I just think Hasbro spent a lot of effort into adding this new class, it would be shocking for them to get rid of it. Specifically the Master tech (tiny figure that plugs into a shell that's a weapon/vehicle/pretender) is likely not staying. But maybe figures along that size, or accessory packs like we have been asking for? I think it's possible.
We likely won't know till Summer at the earliest, but I would just be shocked if they abandon the price point altogether.
Posted by blackeyedprime on February 19th, 2018 @ 12:10pm CST
I'm good if they go for pure cybertron modes, I can skip the line and concentrate on picking up older figures tho I can't refuse more titan masters (I'll even pick up the baynus nitro and cogman at some point)
Unicron emissaries, quintesons, Kranix, Arblus.
Some more femme bots (not combiners), more duocons, triggercons, apeface and snapdragon.
Reflector and the other headmasters nightbeat etc & other targetmasters.
Wouldn't mind seeing some odd throwbacks to other lines like Armada, Cybertron, car robots etc too. Even some G2 or victory stuff would be okay for me. Raiden Titan class for sure.
Posted by Munkky on February 19th, 2018 @ 12:52pm CST
My hopes for more Beast Wars figures are pretty much dead now, and there aren't that many G1 characters left that I'd like new figures of. A decent Voyager or Leader Shockwave and that's it really. I do wonder if Prime Master Prima, Nexus Prime and Amalgamous will ever see the light of day now Power of the Primes has been cut short.

Well I'm sure Reflector would like to give a few four lettered words.
How about making some d@mn Quinteson's. Switch'em up a little and make them a threat having them combine to be a Dweller!
How about finally making the DJD!!? Bet they'd all sell more than Drift!
A quality Leader class Scorponok would be nice.... Just don't ignore the "quality" part. I don't want his claws on his feet because magic wand's are next year's gimmick.

Am I the only one that things monster combiners like the Seacons and Pretender Monsters would actually work better on Cybertron since they aren't Earth based (unlike Dino Force, more or less, and the Predacons).
Maybe this'll be the line that gives us Star Convoy and Super Megatron. I'm not ever giving up on that happening someday.

I would like to see the DJD, even if they've been gone for a couple of years. If not as a wide release for each, maybe as an exclusive box set.
I know we got a Titan Class figure, but I would love to see a Leader class Fortress Maximus figure, with only Cerebros as the single headmaster.
This line, if what Warden has said will be proven right, should fill the rest of my G1 wants, one of which is a comic accurate G1 Perceptor. The Prime Trilogy line did a good job of getting a lot of figures right, for me at least, but it's not enough. It's never enough!
Having said that, yes I would love to see another line revisited, such as Armada or Energon. Those toys were pretty good in their day, but an update shouldn't hurt, considering the advancements in engineering.

I think Tidal Wave is the Titan Class figure no one realizes they want yet. The old Ultra class figure is amazingly playable, and with extra size there could be room for something like a proper base mode, Ramjet Mini-Con and the Sea Team as deployers/extra parts a la Six-Gun and Scamper, or even a literal portal to the Noisemaze where an alternate perception of reality awaits to crush your dreams while you soil your hands with mud you crudely fashioned into the shape of an aircraft carrier. Uh... anyways, there's a Broadside retool in there too for the G1 crew, or even a crazy USS Flagg crossover!lakebot wrote:I would love some retools of Armada and Energon characters. I hope Haslab goes after something like that for TFs. Star Wars didn't go straight to the Death Star, so Transformers doesn't need to go straight to Unicron.

Titan Class Tidal Wave, would be mental. It would have to have the lift function of the original but it hold more planes than just a squashed Ramjet

Why should death be a factor? Shockwave and Bumblebee have both been dead since Dark Cybertron. And Mirage has been dead for a couple mouths now yet is part of a poll to be made next year while the WFC theme will be based on the past anyway.
Plus the DJD were featured in the last episode of LL despite their deaths. I'll still buy them dead or not.
Tarn is a tank, Kaon can be one as well (simular to Perseptor), Vos could be a Target Master or cannon inspired by Galvatron. While Tesarus and Helex could both be Mad Max type vehicles with features simular to their origins. It's in no ways hard to make these characters. But if Hasbro is cool with 3rd Party constantly eating their lunch well so be it....

I have been saying it for at least a couple of years. Ever since Devastator came out. The ultra class figure was pretty good, even though it could have used some more articulation. The advanced engineering and bigger size can fix that. I don't even care if they abandon Ramjet, as the Mini-con gimmick was for Armada anyway. If they do keep him, he would probably be Legends sized, deluxe size would be too big to fit in the lift.ScottyP wrote:I think Tidal Wave is the Titan Class figure no one realizes they want yet.

I'm still kind of surprised thrilling 30 sandstorm didn't get repainted as G1 Sureshot so he might turn up in war for cybertron,

That, and the fact that none of the toys are really accurate to any particular car anymore, makes me think we aren't just going to see Cybertronian alt-modes.
And, as William pointed out, they explicitly stated that we will see old molds pop back up (reengineering, retools, etc) from time to time.
Now, what I am most curious about is the post 2021 timeframe. It sounds like Generations is on a 3 year lifecycle now. So anything can happen after 2021, and it would be very interesting to see how the figures change as the demographics change (older, more "G1" oriented fans bowing out, younger fans with different expectations from the more "mature" line).
