New Images of Legacy Voyager Leo Prime

Mark Maher posted new images of Transformers Legacy Leo Prime on Instagram along with the following blurb presenting him to fans. It's neat that he makes the connection with BW Skywarp since the counterpart to the lion component of Magnaboss in Japan was Lio Jr, Lio Convoy's son (now here called Leo Prime since there are legal issues with the "Convoy" name at the moment).

You can read the blurb below the images and we also have this fun note regarding why Leo prime was chosen for the Legacy line:

Q: Will there be more Japanese Beast Wars Characters aside from Leo Prime?
A: Leo Prime was an easy sell to corporate since he is a leader called Prime and a lion, both attributes familiar and appealing to kids. Hasbro will keep testing the market and audience. The term Convoy is a trademarked name in Japan, so that name cannot be used on packaging by Hasbro.

Legacy Evolution Voyager Leo Prime needs to be the king of your Legacy collection! Shu Umezu san just absolutely floored me with this absolute masterpiece of a figure. This guy jumped right out the Beast Wars II animated series and I really couldn’t be happier about it.

This guy has all the features you could ever dream of, his Evo-Fusion Lion claw technique is unmatched. He has his Lion Typhoon attack mode with the sweet Lio missiles and blasters that have all sorts of places to flex them. The missiles even have storage in the underside of the beast hide and can actually be used as a jetpack! All the stuff is blast effect compatible, the blasters that plug in on top can remain hidden under the mane inside the awesomely sculpted lion head. He has a flip open panel that reveals his Energon Matrix.

Articulation is out of this world, you even got some awesome range in beast mode!

I mean, cmon now people! The colors and actual spray op placement is marvelous.

Break out your Yuya san Skywarp to hitch a ride on this absolute beast of a figure. Name off the other characters you would like to see from this great Japanese series!

While he says the toy can do the Lion Typhoon, I'm not seeing anything to indicate that the mane can actually do this. I'm thinking he may have simply confused it for both Lio Beam and Lio Missile. A shame, too, since the Lion Typhoon is arguably Lio Convoy's most iconic attack.

Skywarp (atop Lio Convoy) being the Takara-renamed Silverbolt ala Team Magnaboss. The fact that a Lion and an Eagle are pictured. But alas the wrong Lion and Eagle...

Maybe someday the Beast Wars combiners will get an update?

I know. I think the non-combining Skywarp figure was indicative of that. If only the BW Combiners had the prominence of their G1 counterparts, there would be a bigger deal made of them. At least the Tripredacus Council briefly got a cameo in [Mainframe] Beast Wars. The Maximal Elders never did.

Just one of those things sadly. I'm still hoping that they'll carry on including beast wars characters in the main line going forward but I've got doubts about that as well.

Though I suppose if the new live action movie does well, that could raise more interest in Beast formers.

Beast Wars is just one of those lines that you look at the toyline and lament how many really interesting designs will remain in obscurity forever.

Even movies won't give Transquito, Sonar or Cybershark a shot at the spotlight.

Legacy versions of Cybershark and Wolfang would be hype.

Indeed. Assuming Cybershark doesn't get bastardised into Sky-Byte, again.

Things likely would have been very different had the show been hand-drawn instead of animated by Mainframe.

True. Alternatively if Mainframe had received a larger budget. But first season aside, I don't think the writing or characterisation would have been as good with a ballooned cast ala Sunbow.

That sure wasn't happening. Even Pixar had limits back then. CGI was super expensive.

Indeed. So which is better? Nearly every toy getting represented in so-so capacity, or focusing exceptionally well on just a small handful while all the rest get left out the picture?

In this case, you can't have your cake and eat it too, I'm afraid. You gotta pick one or the other.

I'd pick the approach they took, focusing on a smaller cast and developing them.

Indeed and Mainframe were one of the pioneers of that. Especially on the TV side of CG. Some of it EG Shadow Raiders, is still impressive today.

Definitely the latter. Even Sunbow learned that lesson (a little) in the Post-Movie seasons. With the whole toyline in mind, I'd have just swapped out a few from BW to better represent the line. Silverbolt and Quickstrike, for example, being among the least interesting Fuzor designs and That line is never being picked up again.

Shame the lion face seems so derpy. It looks like the cowardly lion from the Wizard of Oz, crossed with a basset hound…

To me, it looks a lot closer to Prowl, here. Than the Lion face of Lio Convoy.
