And holy crap, those lips looks so horrible. That combined with the flames... I guess the movie Prime is truly dead to me now.

I pray more faceplate and less lips still because the faceplate is a Prime Trademark...

i think mouth for talking, face plate for battle. I always wondered how does Prime or Soundwave eat/ drink energon..

Nope, don't like an exposed mouth on Prime. Lips are for Primal. And if they can give Prime a humanish face, why not Starscream, Bumblebee, etc?

That's what I don't understand. I don't dislike any of the designs really, but I don't understand why some of them look like a completely different species to others.

human faces for the good guys to better make them seem "human" and relatible. while the villians will always look less human oe larger then life. it's basic super hero supervillan 101

If the bigwigs thought the lips were so damn cool, then why doesn't a single piece of merchandise, promotional material or toy we've seen have Prime with his mouth?

No hero can keep their mask on during the big fight at the end of the movie. Look at Spiderman 1, 2 and the previews for 3. Prime just wants in.

What i dont understand is that with the massive fan reaction to the design's from the beginning how they at the very least didnt just let us have this one tiny weeeny little thing... GIVE PRIME HIS GODDAMN FACEPLATE!!!... ahem... sorry about that... I can put up with everything else in this movie but that is the one thing that is seriously p**sing me off.

BTW Ironhide looks wicked in that shot.

I'm a child of the 80's and I can deal with it just fine. The only thing I am having a hard time dealing with in this movie is Ratchet being green. Now THAT sucks.

The designs are something new, just like every other incarnation of the Transformers.

These aren't supposed to be G1 designs, DEAL WITH IT.

Now, I think Prime looks better this way anyways.

I disagree. Everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY, I've talked to about this film was shocked when I told them that Optimus Prime had lips instead of his 'mask' in the movie. Everybody did a double-take and said something to the effect of 'you can't do that, Prime needs his mask thing or else he just won't look like himself'

True, and most non-fan people I talked to were fine with him being a peterbilt, but hated the idea of flames on Prime, they said it was just over the top and not like the noble personnality Prime is supposed to have.

I've liked alot of the choices they made for the film, but I think when 99% of the fandom bitch about something, it's a problem with the filmmakers' choices, and not the problem of the fandom.

I think anyone who still thinks this movie is a G1 remake is just being naïve by now. This movie might not be G1, but it is still TRANSFORMERS, and some things you just don't change, because I don't know about everyone else, but when you stick flames and lips on Optimus Prime, well, he just ain't Optimus Prime to me anymore.

One thing i have noticed looking at Ironhide from that shot is that because the faces have such fussy looking features i can see it being difficult to see what way the big robots are looking when they arent really up close the camera... maybe the blow glowing eyes will be easy to see or something.

I think the G1 Prime is the only incarnation of Prime that does not have lips. Think about it. Really, what is the big deal?

I don't see what the big fuss is about Prime having lips. He had lips in beast wars. He had lips and a faceplate most recently in Cybertron. The bottom line is: while that face plate is cool, it doesn't attract the ladies - instead he shows the lips when they are around. Yeah.

Moreover, he could have had lips in G1 and they just never showed them. His faceplate moved up and down alot as if he had a mouth under it.

Before anyone can blast you for your beast wars connection, Primal wasnt Prime. He was an homage to him, but I know what you are going for

how does Prime eat energon. with a face plate ..he's gotta have a mouth..

Actually, Prime was shown to have a little square speaker under his faceplate in one of the late Marvel comics, after he got somewhat blowed up during the battle with Unicron. That was it. Just a little square grill to make noise come out. I always liked that idea.

Prime's face won't be a big issue to me until after I've actually seen it in action, but I agree with what a few folk have said about there being a reason why Prime always appears on promotional material with the mask in place. From the writers' comments on boards it sounds like there's a lot of discussion about the open face look right up to now, so I'm quietly keeping my fingers crossed that there's still time to make the call and quietly slip the faceplate into the renders.

I seriously dont think there is time left even if they were to decide to take the mouth out.

If you think back they said 38 hours to render a frame. so say they have to add in the face plate and it takes say 5 hours per frame

5 hours times lets say 1000 frames of prime(just a guess, could be more could be less) = 5000 hours.


54 days I believe until earliest release day, you figure the movie would have to be done at least 10 days prior to that.(most likely longer than that.

so that leaves 44 days times 24 hours in a day = 1056 hours

5000- 1056= not enough time.

Now granted I dont know the specifics but it's not that much of a stretch of imagination to see that they simply do not have enough time to go back and edit the mouth out completely.

Another thing I though about in regards to the mouth versus faceplate...

As if giving Prime a mouth was already completely illogical enough, isn't it just giving the animators more work to do? I'm no expert on the subject, but animating lips must take more time and effort than animating... well, nothing.

Ironhide look really neat, however..

I really ain't fussed about this whole lips deally-o. Prime had lips in Cybertron with a battle mask that slid into place for fighting. And I accepted that guy as prime. This isn't G1, it's a whole new continuity. If it was, then yeah, I would want the faceplate. But ti's not. So it's fine.

I like the look of Prime in that shot. Shame Lebaiu or whatever his name is in the way. Ironhide's looking ready to rumble.

Actually, I think it looks pretty good! Definitely better than the assumed "baboon" shot that we got in that trailer! The face has a look of nobility. The CG artists have really thought this one out.

Well it's a complet new Prime, so I don't realy care for the mouth his face actuly looks prity good (as long as it stays of the toy since it woulden't in toyform ) and Ironhide's looking good as always.

... I can't believe anyone's using the lips on Energon/Cybertron as a reason why the movie Prime ought to have lips. As if they didn't look ridiculous in those cartoons? And it isn't simply a matter of whether or not it's new or different. The opinion of test-screeners seems to be that the ones in the film don't look right. Even if G1 Prime in his numerous G1 incarnations had lips, that wouldn't automatically mean the ones in the film don't look rubbish.

never saw a point in giving him a mouth. Seriously, why would a robot need a mouth anyway, unless it was mimmicking the design of a human being or some other animal that had to eat food instead of just resting in a CR chamber like Prime did in G1. Personally, I always liked the idea that there was no mouth behind the faceplate...made him seem more like the robot he's supposed to be. I really see this as being one of those things like why they always have to unmask pro wrestlers that wear masks....it's like society has this thing that masks have to be done away with & what's underneath exposed. it's a shame Prime has had to suffer for people having this mentality.

.....BTW, anybody ever notice that any Prime figure(not Primal....Prime) that has ever been made with a mouth has not sold well. Hell, look at Energon Prime for example....they gave him a mouth & soon after they changed the mold to give him one. IMHO, Cybertron Prime got away with this only because he still could have his mask cover his mouth, & you could pretend he didn't have one.

The scale in that pic looks out of whack. That must be one REALLY big semi.
